BOSTON, Mass. – The Emmanuel College Men's Soccer Team notched its third win of the season, when the Saints downed Newbury College, 2-1, in non-conference men's soccer action played at Roberto Clemente Field on Tuesday night. With the win, Emmanuel now stands at 3-6 on the season, while the Nighthawks drop to 2-6 with the setback.
After last year's scoreless battle, which ended in a 0-0 double-overtime tie, the two teams came up out of the gates strong, scoring all of the game's goals in the opening 31 minutes of action. Over the twelve-year history between these two programs, the series now stands at 8-2-2, in favor of the Saints.
The first of the three goals was scored just ten minutes into the night. Newbury freshman Alex Davis (Gloucester, Mass.) lifted his shot over the hands of Saints keeper James Withers (East Taunton, Mass.) to give the Nighthawks an early 1-0 edge. Sophomore forward Emmett Dixon (Providence, R.I.) was credited with the assist on the play.
Just seven minutes later, the Saints struck back. Emmanuel took advantage of a long throw-in by Jeff Allen (South Windsor, Conn.) from the left sideline. Allen's throw found Danny Richman (Medfield, Mass.) in the box and he fired in his second goal of the season, tying the contest at 1-1.
With fifteen minutes to go before the half, sophomore David Field (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) headed a pass to freshman Wojciech Kopacz (Garfield, N.J.) and the rookie calmly played the ball into the goal. Kopacz's goal was the first of his collegiate career and would eventually hold up as the game-winner, as all scoring for the game was capped in the 32nd minute.
With under a minute to go before the break, Withers made an incredible save on a Newbury direct kick, to help the Saints hang onto their one-goal lead.
Withers picked up the win in the cage for the Saints, making stops on 7 of Newbury's SOG. The sophomore keeper now improves to 2-1 on the season.
Freshman Cody Nash-Gibney (South Burlington, Vt.) suffered the loss for Newbury, making 6 saves in the effort, as he falls to 1-6 overall.
Emmanuel will end its seven-game home stretch this Thursday night, when the Saints play host to the Colonels of Curry College in a 7:00 PM start. Newbury is back in action on Saturday, when the Nighthawks travel to Becker College for a 1:00 PM kick off.
