BOSTON, Mass. – Wheaton College nipped Emmanuel College, 3-1, in non-conference men's soccer action played under the lights at Roberto Clemente Field on Tuesday night. The win boosts the visiting Lyons to 4-1 on the season, while the Saints fall to 1-4 overall.
Emmanuel struck first with an early goal in the seventeenth minute of play to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Danny Richman (Medfield, Mass.) scored at 16:17 off a pass from Cian O'Sullivn (Agawam, Mass.) for his first tally of the season. Richman's shot would be Emmanuel's lone shot-on-goal for the duration of the game. The Saints were then able to hold the Lyons scoreless over the next twenty-five minutes of action.
Wheaton netted the equalizer at 41:28, when Steven Pinski (Croton-in-Hudson, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the year with an assist coming by way of Michael Cronin (Wethersfield, Conn.). Despite the Lyons out-shooting the Saints 8-2 in the opening frame, the two teams entered the break at halftime knotted at one.
Scoreless play ensued for the almost twenty minutes of the second stanza. Wheaton's Kevin Gil (Pawtucket, R.I.) would hit the game-winner in the 64th minute with his shot off a deflection by Emmanuel keeper Garrett Charette (West Springfield, Mass.).
The Lyons' first chance at an insurance goal came with just over 17 minutes remaining, when Luke Finklestein (Peabody, Mass.) drilled a shot off the crossbar. Wheaton was able to connect in the 85th minute, however. Junior forward Travis Blair (Hastings, N.Y.) one-timed a point blank shot, assisted by Scott Enman, and Wheaton closed out the 3-1 win.
Sophomore goalie Jackson Towle (South Berwick, Me.) picked up his first win of the season, going the distance between the pipes for the Lyons. Towle saw just three Emmanuel shots and allowed the one shot on goal by the Saints. Charette took the loss for Emmanuel, making 10 saves in his 90 minutes of action.
Wheaton College plays again this Saturday, September 14th, when the Lyons travel to Wesleyan for a noontime start. The Saints will also be back in action on Saturday, when they open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play by hosting the Mustangs of Mount Ida College in a 3:00 PM start. This game will follow the Emmanuel women hosting Suffolk University at noon.
