BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts – Boston Men's Soccer Team cruised to a 7-0 victory over Emmanuel College on Thursday afternoon at Clark Athletic Field. The win boosts the Beacons to 3-1 on the season, while the Saints await their first win of 2013 at 0-3.
After battling to a 2-2 double-overtime tie on Emmanuel's home turf in 2012, the Beacons put together a strong offensive showing to topple the visiting Saints in Thursday's rout. Fueling the Beacons' biggest attack was junior Marcus Pizzetti (Malden, Mass.), who finished with the Beacon's first hat trick of the season, while also dishing out a pair of assists. The Bunker Hill Community College transfer was instrumental in getting the Beacons on the board as he had a hand in five of the Beacons' first six goals.
The only goal without a Pizzetti touch belonged to Edmison Barros (Boston, Mass.) off of a Douglas Silveira (Revere, Mass.) assist. The final goal of the night went to Miguel Alcantar (San Diego, Calif.) after his shot to the near post took a wild bounce off a Emmanuel defender and into the near side netting. For Pizzetti, his first goal as a Beacon came in the 26th minute on a beautiful free kick, which bent around the Emmanuel wall and into the far side post.
Pizzetti connected with Rolando Barbosa twice in a span of three minutes to firmly put UMB in control of the contest. Barbosa, who played with Pizzetti at Bunker Hill, notched his second goal of 2013 after driving home a long pass from his junior teammate. He would then receive another long pass from Pizzetti, and with some fancy footwork beat Emmanuel's junior keeper Garrett Charette (West Springfield, Mass.) and tapped the ball in to make it a six-goal advantage.
In total UMB doubled up the Emmanuel shots, totaling 26 to just 13 by the Saints. The Beacons also managed five corner kicks as compared to the Saints' two.
Notching his second-straight shutout victory was Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.), who made just one stop in the first half. Camilo Florez (Manizales, Colombia) entered the match in the second half and made two saves to secure the Beacons shutout win. Charette took the loss for Emmanuel, but made 7 saves in his 90 minutes in net.
Emmanuel will take on Daniel Webster College on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM in the Saints' home opener at Clemente Field. The Beacons will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Gordon College for a 7:00 PM non-conference match.
