BOSTON, Mass - The Emmanuel College Saints suffered a 2-0 loss to the cross-town Lions of Emerson College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer rivalry played on Roberto Clemente Field on Saturday afternoon. With their second-straight GNAC loss, the Saints fell to 3-7-2 on the season and 2-5 in league play. Emerson improved to 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the GNAC. These two teams last met in the quarterfinals of the 2011 GNAC Tournament, when the Saints upset the Lions, 3-2.
In the first half of Saturday's GNAC double-header, the Lions managed a goal in each frame, but out-shot the Saints just 15-14 on the day. Emerson's first goal of the contest came in the 36th minute. A long throw-in from the left sideline just grazed the head of Juan Ossa (Bogota, Columbia), before being drilled into the bottom of the net by senior midfielder Lucas Parolin (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Ossa was credited with the assist on Parolin's first goal of the season. The marker would eventually hold up as the game-winner.
Emmanuel nearly had the equalizer late in the first half, but Allan Parrelli's (Reading, Mass.) goal was called back on an off-sides call. The Saints entered the break, trailing 1-0, after out-shooting the Lions, 8-7, in the opening half.
Emerson would add an insurance goal to their total midway through the second period. Sophomore forward Even Gooden (Amherst, Mass.) made a quick cross from the left side to a cutting Jacob Lawrence (Clifton, Va.) on the break, who netted his fifth goal of the season and put the Lions up, 2-0.
Freshman keeper Carter Bowers (Gorham, Me.) managed stops on the Saints' 3 shots on goal and earned his 2nd win of the season. Emmanuel's sophomore keeper Garrett Charette (West Springfield, Mass.) took the loss for the Saints, but made 12 saves in the 90 minute effort.
Emmanuel plays next on Monday afternoon, when the Saints travel to Newton, Mass. for a GNAC match-up with Mount Ida College. Kick-off is set for noon. Emerson is also in action on Monday, as they travel to Rivier University for a 3:00 PM start.
