BOSTON, Mass. – MIT rolled to a 7-1 win over the Emmanuel College Saints in non-conference Men's Soccer action played at Roberto Clemente Field on Saturday afternoon. MIT remained perfect in the match-up between these two programs, with the Engineers taking their 5th win in five meetings. With the loss, Emmanuel extends its slide to four games and falls to 1-5-2 on the season. MIT moves to 6-2 with the win.
The scoring began early for the visiting Engineers. Just two and a half minutes into the game, MIT freshman Andrew Liotta (Menlo Park, Calif.) took a shot heading the ball off the right post, which then bounced back off the head of sophomore forward John Kramer (Glastonbury, Conn.) and found the back of the Emmanuel net.
Just five minutes later, the Engineers tacked on another one. Sophomore midfielder Nick Diamantoni (Belle Mead, N.J.) carried the ball down the left side on a breakaway and fed a cutting Sean Bingham (Garden City, N.J.), who put MIT up, 2-0.
Bingham would score his 9th goal of the season later in the half, when Diamantoni led him to the goal in the 22nd minute and the Engineers led, 3-0.
The Saints scored their lone goal of the contest in the 28th minute, when senior forward Kevin Shirley (Madison, Conn.) drilled a penalty kick past MIT's freshman keeper Jake Amereno (Commack, N.Y.). This was Shirley's second goal of the season.
After out-shooting the Saints 18-4 in the first period, MIT carried the 3-1 scoring edge into the break at halftime.
The momentum remained with the visitors after the break, as MIT would score immediately after the kick off. Liotta fed a long pass to Kramer after the opening touch and he scored his second goal of the contest just 14 seconds into the second half.
MIT continued to pressure and scored again a minute and a half later. An Engineer corner kick led to a scramble in front of the Emmanuel goal and freshman midfielder Austin Freel (San Diego, Calif.) was able to place the ball past a diving Garrett Charette (West Springfield, Mass.) and MIT led, 5-1.
The Saints were able to hold the Engineers scoreless for the next 30 minutes, but the visitors would add on two more before the onslaught was complete. Senior forward Tim Joubert (Meritt Island, Fla.) drilled a rocket from 30 yards out into the upper portion of the Emmanuel net at 78:16 with an assist from Nick Albarran (Buffalo, N.Y.). Sophomore Jason Adler (Scarsdale, N.Y.) then scored unassisted at 81:12 to cap the scoring at 7 for MIT.
MIT out-shot Emmanuel, 26-8, for the game. Charette made 7 saves in 81 minutes of action. He was relieved by freshman Hunter Schwoerke (Burlington, Conn.), who had 1 save in and let in 1 goal in his 9 minutes of action.
Amereno picked up the win for the Engineers, his 3rd of the season, making 1 save in 42 minutes of play. He was relieved by Samuel Cannon (Scarsdale, N.Y.), who made 1 save in 41 minutes and Colin Hong (Honolulu, Hi.), who played 7 minutes.
Emmanuel will return to GNAC action on Tuesday night, hosting Rivier College in a 7:00 PM start. MIT will host Elms College on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
