Boston, Mass. – Emmanuel College sophomore goalkeeper Garrett Charette (West Springfield, Mass.) made seven saves while Newbury College freshman keeper Antonios Tran (Chelsea, Mass.) collected nine saves to lead the two squads in a 0-0 (2OT) draw Tuesday evening at Roberto Clemente Field. With the tie, the Saints now stand at 1-1-2 overall on the year while the Nighthawks boast a 2-2-1 mark.
Emmanuel was in charge for most of the contest, owning a 22-13 advantage in shots and a 12-4 margin in corner kicks but the Saints could not thwart Tran and the Newbury backline.
The Saints controlled the pace of play for much of the opening frame but the best scoring opportunity came with just over a minute to play in the half as senior midfielder Shaundize Moosavizadeh (Winchester, Mass.) found himself on a breakaway on the right side on the field. Moosavizadeh fired away a low shot that Charette was able to save and then while the keeper was on the ground Moosavizadeh collected the rebound and fired another shot towards that goal that Charette was able to redirect out of bounds to end the threat.
In the second half, Emmanuel outshot the Nighthawks 15-6 and had several good looks to get on the board. Junior midfielder Danny Richman (Medfield, Mass.) appeared to have Tran beat with a left footed shot from 25 yards out but the ball hit the far post before Tran was able to secure the rebound with just over 22 minutes remaining in regulation.
In the first overtime period, sophomore James Carroll (Guilford, Conn.) had a chance to end the game but his shot from inside the 18-yard box sailed wide-right of the net.
With four minutes remaining in the second overtime period, Moosavizadeh was able to again break through the Emmanuel backline for a chance to give the Nighthawks the win but his attempt was just wide of the ride post as the game would end in the 0-0 tie.
The Saints will return to action on Thursday when they head to Cambridge, Mass for a non-conference contest against Lesley University at 8:00 PM while Newbury is back in action the same day when they head to Fisher College for a 4:30 PM contest.
