THE LEAD – Senior Nicholas Fulgione (North Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Jack Burns (Clarksville, Md.) each scored five goals to lift visiting Emerson College past Emmanuel College, 20-9, Tuesday evening in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Roberto Clemente Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions got out to a quick start scoring five goals to open the action highlighted by back-to-back Fulgione markers to make it 5-0 with 5:52 to play in the first. EC senior Drew Chant (Warwick, R.I.) got the Saints on the board with 2:34 remaining in the quarter to account for a 5-1 score at the end of one.
- Burns and Chant traded goals to open the second before Emerson rattled off three in a row to bump the lead to 9-2 with 6:10 left. The Saints made it a five-goal game heading into the break with a pair of quality offensive sets to close the half as junior Robert Favuzza (Saugus, Mass.) and senior Colin Dickinson (Barre, Vt.) found the back of the net to cut the lead to 9-4 heading into the break.
- The Saints got a quick third quarter score from Chant to pull within four at 9-5 but it was as close as they'd get as Emerson responded with four unanswered including a man-up goal from Burns to move the mark to 13-5. Chant gave the Saints a little life with his second goal of the stanza to make it 13-6 but Emerson junior Birk Swan (Palos Verdes, Calif.) found the back of the net with just six seconds to play to kill any momentum and give the Lions a 14-6 cushion going into the final quarter.
- The Lions put the game away with five straight goals to begin the fourth, extending the lead to 19-6 after a score by graduate student Pierce Eldredge (Media, Pa.) with under 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
- Emmanuel closed the game with a 3-1 scoring flurry with late goals by first year Ryan Etzo (Bedford, N.H.), junior Thomas Quigley (Marblehead, Mass.) and senior Ryan Castle (Boxford, Mass.) to account for the 20-9 final score.
