THE LEAD – Emmanuel College used three dominant defensive quarters to shutdown Dean College, 10-6, Friday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's lacrosse action at Roberto Clement Field. The Saints built up a 7-1 lead through the first 45 minutes of action and held on for the 10-6 victory, their sixth straight win on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- EC put two on the board in the opening 15 minutes behind the senior firepower of Ryan Castle (Boxford, Mass.) and Colin Dickinson (Barre, Vt.). Castle got the scoring started with a man-up tally 4:15 into the action before Dickinson found the twine with an unassisted score with 4:37 left in the frame.
- First year Cole Cloney (Medfield, Mass.) made it 3-0 three minutes into the second quarter with the Saints second man-up score of the contest, with both goals coming on assists from junior Thomas Quigley (Marblehead, Mass.).
- Midway through the second, Dean got on the board with their only goal over the first three quarters, coming on an unassisted strike by Alec Speirs (Old Lyme, Conn.) with 11:20 left in the half.
- The Saints responded, closing out the frame with three more goals to build a 6-1 by the break. Dickinson made it 4-1 before Castle netted EC's next two goals before halftime, with his third of the day coming off a feed from first year Ryan Etzo (Bedford, N.H.).
- Castle returned the favor to Etzo to open the third quarter with 5:21 remaining for the only goal by either side to move things to a 7-1 score heading into the final stanza.
- The Bulldogs attack did all they could to keep things interesting early in the fourth as Owen Bride (Lebanon, N.H.) and Diego Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, Mass.) each found the back of the net over the two minutes of action to pull within striking distance at 7-3 with over 13 minutes to play.
- Over the next six minutes, Emmanuel matched those scores to regain the six-goal cushion as senior Drew Chant (Warwick, R.I.) got into the mix with his fifth of the season before Dickinson scored his third of the action to make it 9-3 with 7:08 to play.
- Speirs and Brine answered with their second goals of the night, making it 9-5 with 4:34 left but Etzo closed the door on any late comeback with another score with 3:09 on the clock to cap EC's scoring with their 10th of the night and double the Bulldogs up at 10-5.
- Alvarez-Segee finished the night with his second goal to wrap the scoring at 10-6 on a man-up finish with 1:55 left before the final horn.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Dickinson and Castle each finished the night with three goals. With Dickinson's first quarter tally, he became the seventh player in program history to record 100 career points and the third this year joining Castle and Quigley in the club.
- Randy Castle (Boxford, Mass.) made 16 saves to earn the win, improving to 7-1 on the season.
- James Rollins (Old Lyme, Conn.) played well in defeat for Dean, making 15 saves to fall to 5-3 overall.
