THE LEAD – Graduate student attacker Cian Keohane (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored five straight goals to open play and power Nichols College past visiting Emmanuel College, 14-8, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference Men's Lacrosse action at Vendetti Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Keohane wasted little time to get the hosts on the board, finishing off a pass from sophomore Jack Ellis (Hampton, N.H.) to make it 1-0 just 1:42 into the contest. The duo hooked up again at the 9:44 mark for Keohane's second goal of the quarter to double to lead to 2-0 on a man-up tally before making it 3-0 with 8:30 to play in the stanza, depositing his third straight off a Dylan DeRubeis (Wayland, Mass.) assist. His fourth goal came with 6:02 remaining in the frame on an unassisted finish before rounding out the quarter with a man-down score thanks to a quick clear after a wide Emmanuel shot during their man-up opportunity. Ryan Warner (Grafton, Mass.) found Keohane by the net who gave Nichols the 5-0 lead with 3:24 left in the first.
- Nichols scored three straight to open the second and bump the lead to 8-0 before the Saints got on the board with 7:48 to play in the half as Colin Dickinson (Barre, Vt.) made it 8-1 with his second goal of the season, assisted by first year Cole Cloney (Medfield, Mass.).
- The Bison did not allow the goal to stop their offensive rhythm as the hosts tacked on three more goals before the end of the quarter to increase the lead to 11-1 following a Warner score with 1:07 to play.
- Emmanuel got a nice lift just before the half, forcing a Nichols turnover on a clear attempt to get one more offensive look. Sophomore Ryan Etzo (Bedford, N.H.) found Cloney at the top of the box to set up a strong shot that beat Nichols sophomore goalie Brady Morgan (Framingham, Mass.) in the upper left corner of the net to make it 11-2 with six seconds to play before halftime.
- EC used the momentum scoring back-to-back goals to open the third quarter, cutting the NC lead to 11-4. Junior Robert Favuzza (Saugus, Mass.) got the first before Cloney scored his second of the action with 8:42 to play in the quarter. The Saints played a near flawless frame before surrendering a goal with one second left on the clock to Hunter Ferreira () to account for a 12-4 score entering the fourth.
- Emmanuel made a late charge, scoring four straight goals over the final five minutes of the contest to account for the 14-8 final. Favuzza scored his second goal of the afternoon to start the late run on a man-up marker with 5:00 to play. Junior Thomas Quigley (Marblehead, Mass.) scored two consecutive tallies to move the needle to 14-7 before Cloney capped the scoring with his third of the day in the 14-8 road loss.
