THE LEAD – The Lasers used a 10-3 first half, including a 6-1 second quarter, to help lead Lasell to a 13-8 victory over the Emmanuel Saints on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Back-to-back goals, scored 12 seconds apart, by Lasell senior Bash Cunningham (Norwalk, Conn.) and first-year Ryan Stone (Granby, Conn.) had Lasell up two, early in the first. Saints junior Drew Chant (Warwick, R.I.) cut the deficit in half with a man-up goal, but two more goals for LU had them leading 4-1, until EC senior David Roa (Warwick, R.I.) took a face-off win, all the way to goal, with 31 seconds remaining in the quarter, to pull the Emmanuel deficit to 4-2 after a quarter.
- The Lasers outscored the Saints 6-1 in the second quarter, thanks to six goals from five different LU players. Lasell senior James Anderson (Medway, Mass.) scored twice in the quarter while Stone finished off his hat trick, helping the Lasers to a 10-3 lead at the half.
- In the third quarter, the Saints cut the deficit to five thanks to goals from senior Colin Dickinson (Barre, Vt.) and sophomore Thomas Quigley (Marblehead, Mass.) but a pair of late-quarter goals by Anderson with 16 seconds and two seconds remaining in the quarter, reestablished the Lasell seven-goal advantage at 12-5.
- The Saints again closed to within five in the fourth quarter with goals by Dickinson, junior Ryan Castle (Boxford, Mass.), and sophomore Robert Favuzza (Saugus, Mass.), leaving EC trailing 13-8 with 4:48 remaining. But the Lasers defense stood strong to finish out the game, claiming the five-goal win.
