Late Goal Lifts Dean Past Men's Lacrosse, 8-7
BOSTON, Mass. - First year Diego Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal with eight seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Dean College men’s lacrosse team over host Emmanuel College, 8-7, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Roberto Clemente Field.

THE LEAD: First year Diego Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal with eight seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Dean College men's lacrosse team over host Emmanuel College, 8-7, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Roberto Clemente Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Saints trailed 6-5 entering the final quarter but evened the score at 6-all on a marker by senior Joe Cuticelli (Madison, Conn.) with 12:47 on the clock.
- Dean answered with a man-up score with 11:25 to play to regain a 7-6 lead on Greg Centeio's (Fairhaven, Mass.) third goal of the day but the Saints countered two minutes later to knot the game at 7-7 on an unassisted score by sophomore Ryan Castle (Boxford, Mass.) setting the scene for Alvarez-Segee's late-game heroics.
- Emmanuel controlled most of the first quarter action, jumping out to a 4-2 advantage on goals by senior Nick Bontempo (Water Mill, N.Y.), junior Colin Dickinson (Barre, Vt.), sophomore Derek DelVecchio (Saugus, Mass.) and first year Aidan Sullivan (Burlington, Conn.).
- The Bulldogs turned the tables in the second stanza with a 3-0 flurry on goals by Alec Speirs (Old Lyme, Conn.), Centeio and Nick Dunn (Medford, Mass.) to take a 5-4 lead into the break.
- EC evened the score midway through the third quarter at 5-5 on an unassisted goal by first year Thomas Quigley (Marblehead, Mass.) but gave it back with just 1:12 to play in the period on another Centeio score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Alexander Govoni (Lakeville, Mass.) earned the win in net for Dean making 16 saves to improve to 1-2 on the year in between the pipes.
- EC sophomore goalie Randy Castle (Boxford, Mass.) made seven saves in 36 minutes of action before first year keeper Eric Anderson (Sparta, N.J.) closed the action with four saves while suffering the loss to drop to 0-1.
- The Saints outshot the Bulldogs by a 39-31 margin in defeat and also won the faceoff battle with a 10-9 edge.
- The win marks the first GNAC victory for the Dean men's lacrosse program since joining the conference officially in 2020.
