KELLY NETS GAME-WINNER IN OT TO LIFT MEN'S LACROSSE PAST SALEM STATE, 7-6
Salem, Mass. -- Justin Kelly (Collegeville, PA) scored the game-winning goal in sudden death to lead the Emmanuel College Saints past the Vikings of Salem State 7-6 Monday afternoon at Alumni Field. Emmanuel improves to 2-3 on the season, while Salem State drops to 2-3 overall.
Salem, Mass. -- Justin Kelly (Collegeville, PA) scored the game-winning goal in sudden death to lead the Emmanuel College Saints past the Vikings of Salem State 7-6 Monday afternoon at Alumni Field. Emmanuel improves to 2-3 on the season, while Salem State drops to 2-3 overall.
Andy Rice (Weymouth, MA) struck first for the Vikings on a Jacob Scordato (Milford, MA) assist, but Mike Rogers (New Haven, CT) countered with an unassisted goal for the Saints. Rice and Rogers would each add another goal for their teams to make it 2-2 going into the 2nd period.
Tony Cibelli (Westboro, MA) fired in a shot for the only score of the second period to give the Saints a 3-2 lead at the half.
Alex Pearsons (Burlington, MA) tied the game for Salem State with a goal assisted by Max Gansenberg (Beverly, MA), but Rogers would regain the lead for Emmanuel on an assist from Ryan Sabuda (Indianapolis, IN).
In the fourth, Matt Whited (Falmouth ,MA) wasted no time tying the game at 4-4 on an assist from Vikings' captain Frank Lento (Salem, MA). Kevin Verity (Boston, MA) would get the go-ahead goal on a pass from Ben Melaugh (Billerica, MA) with 12:09 remaining in the period. Pearons and Gansenberg both scored for the Vikings but Kalie Maclean-Daley (Moretown, VT) notched two goals for the Saints including the game-tying goal to make it a 6-6 with 4:03 left to force a sudden death.
In overtime, Justin Kelly (Collegeville, PA) rifled in the game-winning goal for the Saints with 1:08 remaining in sudden death.
Rogers led the Saints in scoring netting a total of three goals while Joel Berger (York, Maine) topped Emmanuel in groundballs with five. Ian Abrahamson (Billerica, MA) and William Angell (Littleton, MA) also scooped up five groundballs for the Vikings.
Austin Laurzier (Bedford, NH) blocked eight balls for Emmanuel College. Salem State's Dylan Svenson (Billerica, MA) made 15 saves.
The Vikings will play Curry College on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM while the Saints will also play at their home Wednesday night at 7:00 PM against Albertus Magnus College in their GNAC opener.
