GROTON, Conn. – Saints junior Ian Reynolds (East Haven, Conn.) shot a round of 5-over, 76, claiming medalist honors at the Mitchell Invite III on Thursday afternoon at Shennecossett Golf Course. The first-place finish is the first individual win of Reynold's collegiate career.
After starting 3-over through four holes, Reynolds eventually settled in, making four pars and a bogey to shoot a front-side 40 (+4). Reynolds stayed at +4 through 14, but back-to-back bogeys on 15 and 16 moved him to 6-over on the round. A par on 17 set up what would be a medalist-clinching birdie on the par-5 18th at Shennecossett, as a 20-foot birdie putt sealed a one-shot victory for the junior captain.
Senior Jackson Keplinger (Cheshire, Mass.) matched his collegiate career-low, shooting 12-over-par, 84. First-year Ryan Brunet (Peabody, Mass.) was one shot back from Keplinger, carding a round of 85.
Mount Saint Mary College senior John Del Bene (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) finished second in the individual competition but led his side to the team title on Wednesday. Del Bene shot a 77 as part of a Knights team that totaled 326, winning the team competition over second-place Emmanuel by nine strokes. Wentworth finished third at 340 with Mitchell coming through in last at 406.
The Saints are off for the weekend and head to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship, a two-day event starting Monday, Oct. 9, hosted at New Haven Country Club. Tee times for the GNAC Championship are set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
