GOLF SWINGS AWAY AT MITCHELL INVITATIONAL
GROTON, Conn. – The Emmanuel College men's golf team combined to shoot a 349 on Wednesday afternoon at Shennecossett Golf Course while Dean College shot a team round of 312 to win the Mitchell Invitational.
GROTON, Conn. – The Emmanuel College men's golf team combined to shoot a 349 on Wednesday afternoon at Shennecossett Golf Course while Dean College shot a team round of 312 to win the Mitchell Invitational.
The Dean Bulldogs had three golfers finish in the top 10, led by an even-par round of 71 from Austin McCreary (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) that earned him individual medalist honors. He led the field with four birdies and added 10 pars for his round. Charlie Banks (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) shot 76 with a pair of birdies to tie for runner-up while Kyle Bemis (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) placed seventh with an 81.
Becker College finished second in the team standings with a 327. Colin McCarthy (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) tied for runner-up with a round of 76 while Corey Sherman (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) and MacGregor Howe (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile) landed in the top 10 with rounds of 82 and 83, respectively.
Mitchell turned in a team round of 333 to finish third. Nick Knisel (Weatogue, Conn./Simsbury) rounded out the three-way tie for second place with a 76, tying his low round of the season. David Eichelberg (Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard) finished sixth with a round of 80 while Michael Izzo (Hamden, Conn./Notre Dame) tied for 10th at 83. Francis Prettitore (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) shot 94 to round out the scoring for the Mariners.
Eastern Nazarene College (340), Emmanuel College (349) and Albertus Magnus College (388) rounded out the team standings. Michael Dietz (North Charleston, S.C./Summerville) paced the Lions with a round of 79 that included a tournament-high 14 pars to finish fifth overall. EC's Colin Cordero (Bolton, Mass./Bolton) recorded the lone eagle of the day and shot 82, tying for eighth to lead the Saints. Brennan Moore (Meriden, Conn./Xavier) paved the way for the Falcons and carded a round of 90.
Emmanuel junior Anthony Springthorpe (Swampscott, Mass.) carded an 86, junior Brian Daly (Burlington, Mass.) posted a 90 and freshman Taylor Kieselback (Simsbury, Conn.) rounded out the EC top four with a 91.
Emmanuel returns to action this weekend for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference two-day tournament. This year's championship will be played at Valley Country Club in Warwick, R.I.
