MEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS 86-70 DECISION TO NORWICH UNIVERSITY
Feb. 15, 2011
The Emmanuel College men's basketball team fell to host Norwich University, 86-70 on Tuesday evening. The Saints got 20 points from senior Tyrone Buchanan with sophomore Xavier Everson adding 10 points to the cause. With the loss, Emmanuel fell to 6-18 on the year.
Prior to the start of the conference matchup, Norwich's three seniors were recognized and honored for their dedication, commitment, and efforts while wearing maroon and gold; Quincy Williams, Cori Boston, and Jaren Jeffcoat.
For the Cadets (15-8, 11-5 GNAC), both Boston and Jeffcoat put up double-figures in the game, as Jeffcoat led with 19 points, two assists and two steals. Boston contributed 15 points, netting three trifectas and making one block and four steals.
Junior Antonio Davis earned a double-double, shooting 5-of-9 from the field and sinking 6-of-7 free throws for 16 points and 10 rebounds. Williams recorded six points, four boards and made one steal on the Saints.
For Emmanuel (6-18, 5-12 GNAC), senior Tyrone Buchanan netted 20 points with 9-of-14 shooting, while sophomore Xavier Everson put up the second-best scoring numbers with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Buchanan netted a trey on the first play of the game to give the Saints an early advantage, but a 3-pointer by Jeffcoat quickly put the home team back in the lead within the first three minutes of action.
The Saints would be left trailing the rest of the game, as Norwich began to pull away and was up 45-30 at the half.
Norwich proved how well they could find each other on the court with their speed and quick passing around the visiting Saints. Early in the second half, with the Cadets up by 15, Williams made a steal on Saints' Everson, and quickly found Jeffcoat down the court. Jeffcoat never missed a beat and passed the ball on to Davis who capitalized with a dunk.
The Cadets held a 22-point spread on their opponents with less than two minutes remaining in regulation time, and the team knew how to keep the crowd on their feet and light up Andrews Hall for their "Senior Day" event.
The Saints shot 37.9% from the field for the game and 37.5% from beyond the arc. Emmanuel also grabbed 40 rebounds and eight assists while totaling 11 steals.
The Saints will return home this Saturday to host Johnson & Wales in the final contest of the regular season at 1:00 p.m.
