SAINTS GET DOUBLE-DOUBLE FROM EVERSON BUT FALLTO EMERSON, 79-72

BOSTON, Mass. - Tom Messinger '11 (Florence, Mass.) and Carlos Negrete '12 (Mission Viejo, Calif. ) each hit four of six three-point attempts enroute to a team-high 17 points each as Emerson College outlasted Emmanuel College 79-72 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference game at Emerson's Brown & Plofker Gym.
The Lions got a balanced scoring effort with Nate Firn '12 (Wadesboro, N.C.) and Alex Dempsey '12 (Anchorage, Ak.) contributing 14 and 12 points respectively. The Lions also got 10 a game high 10 assists and team high six rebounds from Kabir Moss '11 (Chico, Calif.). The Lions balanced attack overcame a 25 point 10 rebound afternoon for the Saints' Xavier Everson '13 (Rochester, N.Y.).
The teams were tied at 17 when a jump shot by Bilali Kalilou-Mack '13 (Windsor, Conn.) gave the Lions a 19-17 edge. Emerson led 35-32 when Messinger hit back to back three-pointers to give the Lions a 41-32 lead with just over a minute remaining in the first half. Two Everson free throws closed the scoring in the period with Emerson holding a 41-34 advantage.
A Dempsey layup with 11:13 remaining in the game pushed the Emerson lead to 58-47. The Saints' rallied with a 7-0 run keyed by five points from Everson. Two Firn free throws temporarily stopped the bleeding for the Lions, but layups by Patrick Ramsey '13 (Easthampton, Mass.) and Everson cut the lead to 60-58.
The teams traded baskets and free throws until a D.J. Fazio '14 (Methuen, Mass.) foul shot pulled the Saints to within 63-62 at the seven minute mark. A traditional three point play by Messinger upped the lead to 66-62 with 5:33 left, and Emmanuel was never able to close that gap.
In addition to Everson, Michael Mailhot '13 (Norwich, Conn.) had 12 points, and Theo Robinson '11 (Springfield, Mass.) scored 10 for the Saints.
Despite being outrebounded 42-31 Emerson took advantage of 22 Saints' miscues, outscoring Emmanuel 32-15 on points off turnovers. The Lions also picked up a dozen steals.
Emerson (9-13, 6-9 GNAC) will travel to Northfield, Vt., on Sunday, February 13 for a 1:00 game postponed from earlier in the season. Emmanuel next travels to Norwich on Tuesday for a 7:30 start.
