Feb. 4, 2008
Boston, MA - The Emmanuel Men's Basketball Team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, as the Saints cruised to an 80-54 victory over visiting Norwich University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Monday night. The Saints shot 45% from the floor (31-69) and knocked down 8 three-pointers in the win.
The Saints, who led wire to wire, came out of the gates on fire, opening the game with a 17-3 run. Emmanuel's first half offense was sparked by the play of rookie guard Torrey Joyner (Bridgeport, CT). Joyner was perfect from the field, hitting 3 of 3 shots and 2 of 2 from three-point range, to lead the Saints with 11 points in just 9 minutes of first half play.
Emmanuel's defense held Norwich to just 8 first-half field goals and forced 15 Cadets turnovers in the opening stanza. The Saints shot 52.9% (18-34) from the floor in the first half and 46.2% (6-13) from three-point range to take a 48-22 advantage into the break.
The Saints' largest lead of the game (32 points) came early in the second half. However, Emmanuel maintained a solid 25-point lead for the entire second half. The Saints were led by junior guard Rob Williams-Hinton (Oak Park, MI), who hit 7 of 13 field goals and netted a game-high 18 points in the win. Freshman forward Tyrone Buchanan (Detroit, MI) joined Williams-Hinton and Joyner in double-figures with 12 points on 5 for 10 shooting. Junior forward Mack Spellman (Clinton, NY) hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds and dished out 6 assists for the Saints.
The Cadets had three players who notched 9 points apiece to lead the team. The tri included junior forward Jamel Bedford (Queens, NY), senior guard Jerrold Williams (Norwalk, CT), and senior guard Cody Hatt (Springfield, VT), who knocked down 3 of 6 from behind the arc.
The Cadets, who are responsible for the Saints' only conference loss this season, fell to 11-8 overall and 7-6 in GNAC play. Emmanuel improved to 14-6 on the season and 12-1 in the conference.
Norwich plays again on Wednesday night (2/6), when the Cadets host the Lasers of Lasell College. The Saints will return to the court on Wednesday, when they travel to Mount Ida College to take on the Mustangs in a 7pm start.
