THE LEAD – Four Saints scored in double-figures including a double-double from junior Donte Pope (Middletown, Conn.) to lift host Emmanuel College past Colby-Sawyer College, 89-69, on Wednesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Jean Yawkey Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Pope got the Saints out to a quick start draining a pair of threes with his first two attempts from the field to give EC an early 8-2 edge just 1:54 into the action.
- Emmanuel continued to push early on and never trailed during the action, building the lead up to as many as 21 in the opening stanza after junior guard Bryant Ciccio (Attleboro, Mass.) drained a three in the corner to move the score to 40-19 with 5:47 left in the half.
- The Saints held Colby-Sawyer to a 35.7% shooting percentage in the opening stanza compared to their 60.0% clip en route to a 47-29 halftime lead powered by 12 points in the half from senior forward Ted Weber (Orange, Conn.)
- EC took its largest lead of the night after junior guard Ryan Grijalva (Stratham, N.H.) connected on a pair of free throws with 15:47 to play to make it a 24-point game at 57-33 before the Chargers picked up the defensive intensity. Over the next seven minutes, CSC outscored the hosts 21-8 as sophomore Kevin Cummings (Portsmouth, N.H.) got the deficit back to 11 points at 65-54 with 8:24 to play.
- The sides continued to battle in an up-tempo second half, trading points to a 77-66 score following a triple by CSC senior Scott Lampron (Concord, N.H.) with 4:03 left but it was the closest the Chargers would come as Emmanuel closed the half on a 12-3 jaunt to pull away from the 89-69 home win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Pope finished the night with a team-high 21 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double, going 9-for-13 form the field which included a 3-for-3 night from downtown.
- Grijalva and Weber finished the night with 15 and 14 points, respectively while senior guard Ricky Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) added 12 points in the win.
- Colby-Sawyer senior forward Omar Boone (Colorado City, Texas) ended the night with a game-high 25 points including 20 in the second half.
- CSC senior guard Terrance Harvey Jr. (Atlanta, Ga.) and Cummings also finished in double-figures with 12 and 10 points.
- The Saints won the battle of the glass, outrebounding the Chargers by a 44-37 (+7) margin including a career-high 13 rebound outing by senior forward Kendrick Jean-Francois (Lynn, Mass.).
