THE LEAD – Beavers senior Terion Moss (Portland, Maine) finished with a season-high 36 points, including 29 points in the second half, helping UMaine Farmington hold off the Emmanuel Saints, 90-83, in the EC Men's Basketball Tip-Off Classic game on Saturday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMaine Farmington led by 11 with 7:26 remaining, poised to take home the victory on Saturday night. But like the Saints last game against Brandeis, Emmanuel kicked their play into another gear, going on a 17-7 scoring surge over 5:06, setting up a one-point, 82-81 game, with 2:20 to play.
- Following a UMF timeout, a series of offensive rebounds would help the Beavers retain possession. Moss benefitted from the second chance opportunity, driving to the rim, scoring off the glass, and getting fouled for a three-point play, putting the Beavers up 85-81.
- Saints junior Donte Pope (Middletown, Conn.) cut the deficit back down to a pair, hitting two shots at the foul line to leave EC trailing 85-83 with 54 seconds to go.
- From that point, the Saints wouldn't score as the final five points went to UMaine Farmington, all scored by Moss, thanks to a layup with 33 seconds, and 3-of-4 shooting, at the line, in the final 15 seconds, helping UMF hold off the surging Saints.
