THE LEAD – The Saints came back from down 14 in the second half to tie Saturday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference game at 80-80, but Albertus Magnus made the shots count in the final 2:33, as the Falcons claimed an 87-82 win over the Emmanuel Saints at Yosinoff Court.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Saints erased a double-digit deficit in the second half to tie the game with under three minutes remaining, but back-to-back layups by Falcons seniors Tyreek Perkins (New Haven, Conn.) and Terry Dawkins (Bronx, N.Y.) edged Albertus Magnus ahead 84-80.
- In the final seconds, the Saints found themselves down by three with the chance at the final shot. Sophomore Bryant Ciccio (Attleboro, Mass.) drove to the basket and kicked a pass to junior Ricky Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) in the corner, but his contested, game-tying three-point shot, was off the mark and rebounded by the Falcons.
- Albertus Magnus led by as many as 14 in the second half, but the Saints wouldn't show any signs of quitting and, after a 20-6 run over the next 8:55 tied the game at 80-80, the Falcons and Saints were set up for a close finish in the final 2:33 of regulation.
- A closely contested first half saw the Falcons pull away in the final 3:22, a surge that gave them the lead at the half. Trailing by two, Albertus Magnus ended the half on an 11-2 run, thanks to 5-for-8 shooting over the span, to take a 55-48 advantage into the locker room.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Perkins led the Falcons with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting and scored his 1,000th career point in the road win. He added a game-high six assists and three steals for Albertus Magnus.
- Dawkins finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds, off the bench, in 26 minutes. Chipping in 16 of the 41 Falcons bench points.
- Saints sophomore Donte Pope (Middletown, Conn.) had a game-high 19 points and added eight rebounds in 25 minutes.
- Ciccio scored 15 for Emmanuel while playing a season-high 35 minutes.
