THE LEAD – A Saints second-half shooting barrage, including a 40-14 run and 10-of-15 from beyond the arc in an 11:37 span, helped launch Emmanuel to an 83-68 victory on Wednesday night against Rivier University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The second half was all Saints thanks to their best three-point shooting performance of any half this season. A one possession lead at the half for Emmanuel quickly grew to double-digits with the Saints opening the second half on a 15-7 run in the first 5:44 to lead 51-40.
- From that point, another Saints scoring run of 25-7 over a five-minute span helped launch Emmanuel to their biggest lead of the night; 29 points and a 76-47 edge.
- In the span of 11:37 to start the second half, the Saints outscored the Raiders 40-14, including a red hot 10-for-15 from beyond the arc and a three-point make by six different Saints.
- Even play early in the first half saw the Raiders and Saints tied at 11-11 in the opening five minutes. Over the next 5:28, Emmanuel found a 13-4 scoring run, including eight straight points by sophomore Ryan Grijalva (Stratham, N.H.), that gave the Saints their largest lead of the half at 24-15.
- Despite a Saints 13-4 run in the middle of the first half, the Raiders stayed within striking distance of Emmanuel, as Rivier trailed 36-33 at halftime, thanks in part to 14 first-half points by senior Miles Gillette (Washington, D.C.).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Grijalva led the Saints with 15 points, including 3-of-6 from three-point territory. He was one of four Saints with three made shots from beyond the arc.
- Graduate student Dakota Wheeler (Easthampton, Mass.) and sophomore Devin Pulsifer (Winthrop, Mass.) were both 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Junior Ricky Martin (Sicklerville, N.J.) shot 3-for-7 from deep. Wheeler and Martin finished with 11 points, Pulsifer added nine for the Saints.
- Junior Ted Weber (Orange, Conn.) was strong on the glass, finishing with a career-high 13 boards in just 18 minutes.
- The Saints finished the second half shooting a season-best in a half 69.2 percent (18-of-26), including 58.8 percent (10-for-17) from three-point land.
- In all, the Saints 15 made three-point shots are the most since the Saints made 16 three's on Feb. 13, 2019, in a win over Anna Maria College.
- For the Raiders, Gillette, and senior Pharaoh Davis (Plainville, Mass.) each finished with 16 points. Junior Nesta Roberts (Manchester, Conn.) and sophomore Ethan Hutchinson (Tilton, N.H.) chipped in with 10 points each.
