THE LEAD: Roger Williams University used an early 10-0 run to take the lead for good en route to a 75-58 victory over Emmanuel College in the opening game of the 2017 RWU/Marriott by Courtyard Men's Basketball Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • After falling behind to the Saints by a 4-2 score, Roger Williams rattled off a 10-0 run to take command of the action for good.
  • The Hawks led by as many as 16 in the opening stanza before Emmanuel was able to narrow the margin to a 37-26 score heading into the break.
  • Emmanuel cut the deficit to single digits early in the second half on a layup by junior guard Joe Tamburro (South Windsor, Conn.) to make it 43-35 but RWU responded with a quick 7-0 run force EC to burn a timeout down 50-35.
  • With 5:24 remaining, senior guard Nick Marini's (Loudonville, N.Y.) layup gave the hosts a 72-47 lead, their largest of the night.
  • Emmanuel outscored the Hawks 11-3 over the final five minutes of play but it was not enough as RWU picked up its second win in as many games.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • EC senior guard Colin Cordero (Bolton, Conn.) paced the Saints with a team-high 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor including 2-for-2 from long range.
  • Tamburro added 12 points for the visiting squad while rookie Zachary Crisafulli (Hatfield, Mass.) netted nine points in his collegiate debut.
  • Marini led all scorers with 17 points and was one assist shy of a double-double with nine helpers.
  • Roger Williams senior forward Jaylen Jennings (Norwalk, Conn.) and junior guard Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) were also in double figures for the Hawks with 16 and 13 points, respectively.
  • Emmanuel has dropped its last six season-openers with the last win on opening night coming back on Nov. 18, 2011 against Wheaton College.

UP NEXT

  • Both teams are back in action tomorrow as the Hawks will play in the RWU/Courtyard by Marriott Tournament Championship game at 3:00 PM while the Saints will play in the Consolation game scheduled for a 1:00 PM tip against the winner/loser of tonight's RPI vs. Framingham State game.
