Both teams struggled early, scoring a combined 17 points in the first eight minutes of play, with Emmanuel holding an 11-6 lead. A lay up from Alexander Brayboy and seven points from Austin Hall helped tie the game at 15-15 with 9:06 left in the half.
The Eagles went on to score 18 unanswered, leading 33-15 with 2:06 remaining in the first. In the run, Jacob Williams had seven, Tyler Withers had five, Eric Shaw had four, and Jamal Newton added two. Emmanuel scored two baskets before the end of the half, narrowing the deficit to 33-19 heading into the break.
In the second, the Eagles started the half on a 12-2 run, pushing the lead to 45-21 by the 12:22 mark. The run was fueled by four points from Brent Mahoney, three from Johnny Cronin, two from Williams and Shaw, and one from Newton.
Emmanuel hit back-to-back three pointers to cut the lead to 54-30 with 8:18 left in the game. The Eagles responded with some easy baskets, including two dunks from Shaw to push the lead to 61-39 at the 4:36 mark. Emmanuel made a last effort in the final minutes, but the Eagles continued to finish in transition and knock down their free throws to secure the victory at 76-57.
The Eagles shot 38.7% from the field (24-62), making 2-17 three pointers and 26-39 free throws. Emmanuel shot 29.5% from the field (23-78), making 6-25 three pointers and 5-10 free throws.
Senior guard Julian Diggs (Upper Marlboro, Md.) netted 13 points, posting double-digits for the third time in four games while Alex Minetti (Wakfield, R.I.) posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Emmett Riddick (Middletown, Conn.) added 10 points off the bench for EC.
The Eagles will return to action on Thursday, as they host Salisbury at 8:00 pm. Emmanuel is back at it tomorrow when they take on McDaniel College at 4:00 PM.
