BOSTON, Mass. – Senior guard Jack Mackey (Warwick, N.Y.) hit seven three pointers to lead #25 Wesleyan University to a 78-60 non-conference victory over Emmanuel College on Monday evening.
Mackey led all scorers with 25 points to lift the Cardinals (17-4) to their 17th win of the season and drop the Saints to 4-15 on the year.
The Cardinals led by as many as 11 in the first half after senior Rashid Epps (New York, N.Y.) hit a layup to extend the lead to 30-19 with 5:49 on the clock. From that point, the Saints outscored the Cardinals 12-6 to head into the break trailing by only five, 36-31.
Three of Wesleyan's first four field goals in the second half were from long distance and the nationally-ranked Cardinals opened their lead to 48-40 after the first five minutes.
The Saints would get as close as five points on a three by Alex Minetti with 11:16 remaining, but Wesleyan's talent took over down the stretch and Emmanuel was unable to get over the hump. The Cardinals used a 15-2 run over a six-minute span to open up a lead of 18 points.
Along with Mackey, seniors Epps and Joe Edmonds (Oklahoma City, Okla.) also reached double-digits for the visitors. Edmonds scored 11 points on 3-6 shooting with three triples, while Epps has 12 points and nine rebounds. Fellow senior BJ Davis filled the stat sheet for the Cardinals, tallying nine points, six rebounds, and seven assists in the win. As a team, Wesleyan knocked down 13 three-point field goals and outrebounded the Saints 47-31.
For the Saints, senior Kyle Davis (Groveland, Mass.) led the way once again with 12 points, but was in foul trouble for much of the second half. Freshman Will Jessup (Westwood, Mass.) chipped in with six points, seven boards, and four assists off the bench.
The Saints will now begin the stretch run of the regular season as they host Saint Joe's Maine on Wednesday Feb. 3 at 7:00 p.m. EC has six games remaining in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play before a potential GNAC Tournament berth at the end of the month.
