JWU TOPS MEN'S BASKETBALL, 89-66
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Robert Lewis (Baltimore, Md.) notched a double-double with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the JWU men's basketball team to a commanding 89-66 victory over Emmanuel College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Wildcat Center on Saturday afternoon.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Robert Lewis (Baltimore, Md.) notched a double-double with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the JWU men's basketball team to a commanding 89-66 victory over Emmanuel College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Wildcat Center on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Curtis Lucas (Providence, R.I.) notched 18 points and dished off four assists while sophomoreQuarry Greenaway (Westchester, N.Y.) had a solid all-around performance with 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Tom Garrick (Seekonk, Mass.) added 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals in the victory for the Wildcats.
Freshman James Sullivan (Wethersfield, Conn.) paced Emmanuel with a game-high 21 points, five rebounds and three assists while sophomore John Clay (Westport, Mass.) was also in double-figures with 10 points and four boards in the setback.
The two teams traded baskets early with JWU leading 19-15 midway through the stanza. The Wildcats then used a 9-2 run, capped by a pair of free throws by senior Matt Barboza (Riverside, R.I.) to take their first double-digit lead, 28-17 with 9:21 left in the first half. JWU built on their lead the remaining of the half before taking the 47-32 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Wildcats shot an impressive 70.8% (17-for-24) from the field for the half while holding Emmanuel to just 46.4 % (13-for-28) shooting from the field.
JWU increased its lead throughout the second half, leading by 27 after a layup by senior Rameek Boyd(New Rochelle, N.Y.) made the score 78-51 with just over eight minutes left in regulation. The Wildcats then cruised to the 89-66 victory. JWU hit an impressive 52.8% (28-53) from the field for the game and held a 38-27 advantage in rebounds for the contest.
With the victory Johnson & Wales is now 16-5 overall and 12-2 in league play while Emmanuel drops to 4-17 on the season and 2-12 in the GNAC. The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, February 11thwhen travel to Anna Maria for a GNAC contest starting at 7:30 p.m.
