BOSTON, Mass. – Emmanuel College freshman men's basketball player Kyle Smith (Los Angeles, Calif.) has been tabbed the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the GNAC office earlier today. Smith's recognition marks the second time this month that he's been named the conference's top rookie as he also earned the honor during the first week of January.
The rookie guard paced the Saints with a game-high 18 points off of 7 for 11 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-4 shooting from behind the arc versus Anna Maria on Monday. Smith recorded a near double-double with his nine points and nine rebounds, while dishing out three assists in the Saint's win over Suffolk on Saturday. The rookie shot 64.7 percent from the floor and 83.3 percent from three point range on the week. Smith averaged 13.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists in his two games played this week.
Smith has started in a team-best 15 of his 16 games played so far this season and is currently averaging double-figures in the scoring column with 10.2 points per game, while dishing out a team-high 2.0 assists per night.
The honor marks the third EC men's player to be recognized as a Rookie of the Week as his classmate James Sullivan (Wethersfield, Conn.) was named the GNAC Rookie of the Week back on November 26, 2013.
Also making the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll for the Saints was senior guard Brandon Jones (Windsor, Conn.) after a solid all around week.
The 4-12 Saints will return to action this evening when they play host to MIT in a non-conference matchup. Game time is set for 7:00 PM in Emmanuel's Jean Yawkey Center gymnasium.
