Emmanuel College's Student-Athlete of the Week is Men's Cross Country runner, Abdi Ibrahim. Ibrahim transferred in to Emmanuel from Roxbury Community College this fall. The junior capped off a phenomenal first year with the Saints by being named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference's Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Year.
Ibrahim began his rookie collegiate season by winning two-straight meets, a local dual-meet versus Emerson College, followed by the Lt. Travis Fuller Invitational at Massachusetts Maritime Academy, where he set the course record. The East Boston, Massachusetts native broke two Emmanuel program records this season, setting the Saints' 5k record with a time of 16:21.20 on September 4th and the 8k record on September 11th with a time of 25:35. Ibrahim was subsequently named the GNAC Runner of the Week twice on 9/6/10 and 9/13/10.
At the October 30th Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship, Ibrahim finished 4th with a time of 28:01.55 and received All-Conference honors. As the first collegiate rookie to cross the finish line in Standish, Maine, Ibrahim was also tabbed the GNAC's Rookie of the Year.
Ibrahim is not only a standout cross country runner, but he is also a very well-liked teammate and a solid all-around individual. Along with his other accolades this season, Ibrahim's Emmanuel teammates voted him to the GNAC's All-Sportsmanship Team.
Ibrahim and the Saints will wrap up the cross country season by competing this weekend in the NCAA Division III Regional Championships at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. Ibrahim is a three-sport athlete and he will spend the winter and spring seasons competing as a mid-distance runner for the Saints' Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field programs.
