EMMANUEL COACHES EARN TOP SPOTS IN LOCAL ROAD RACE
Sept. 12, 2010
ALLSTON, Mass. - Emmanuel Cross Country and Track & Field Coaches Tony DaRocha and Will Feldman each won their respective divisions in the 7th Annual Brian Honan 5k road race held in Allston/Brighton on September 12th. Both runners were presented with medals and gift certificates for New Balance sneakers.
DaRocha, who has been the head coach for the Emmanuel men's and women's cross country and track programs for the past ten years, is a prior winner of the Honan 5k. This year he took 9th place overall, but won the 40 and over age division with his time of 17:37, running a 5:41 per mile pace.
Feldman, one of the programs' assistant coaches and a full-time employee in Emmanuel's Office of Admissions, placed 2nd overall and won the 20-29 age division. Feldman finished just 1 second behind Harvard University's Josh Hicks, who won the race with his time of 16:35. Both Hicks and Feldman ran a 5:21 per mile pace.
The race featured a straight, but hilly, up-and-back 3.1 mile course, stretching from Harvard Avenue in Allston to Oak Square in Brighton. This was the seventh running of the Honan 5k, which is held annually on "Allston/Brighton Day," in memory of former Allston/Brighton City Councilor Brian J. Honan. The race precedes a parade through the city. Major sponsors of this year's race included: New Balance, Agganis Arena, Genzyme, St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, People Federal Savings Bank, Tavern in the Square, The Boston Police, and Clear Channel, to name a few.
The 2010 running of the Honan 5k included one of the race's largest fields with over 1,000 entrants. The Emmanuel Men's and Women's Cross Country and Women's Basketball Teams were among the 100 race volunteers, including five Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) teams. GNAC Commissioner Joe Walsh also serves as one of the race directors. Thanks to Coach DaRocha and Coach Feldman, Emmanuel was well represented at the race again this year.
