SAINTS OPEN SEASON WITH 5TH ANNUAL FENS CLASSIC
BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams kicked off the 2013 season by hosting the 5th Annual Fens Classic, which featured the meet’s largest field including 65 women and 63 men. The women ran a 2-mile course and the men ran a 5k through Boston's historic Backbay Fens area, finishing with a lap of the track circling Roberto Clemente Field. The Wheaton College Lyons took 1st place in the women's race, while the Brandeis University Judges cruised to the top team spot in the men’s race.

The women ran a 2-mile course and the men ran a 5k through Boston's historic Backbay Fens area, finishing with a lap of the track circling Roberto Clemente Field. The Wheaton College Lyons took 1st place in the women's race, while the Brandeis University Judges cruised to the top team spot in the men's race.
Wheaton combined for a team low score of 29 points to lead the eight teams competing in the women's 2-mile event. The Lyons were followed by Emmanuel College (40), UMass Dartmouth (81), Roger Williams University (130), Lesley University (152), Regis College (153), UMass Boston (181) and Wheelock College (188).
Brandeis University used their 36 team points to earn the win over the six other men's teams in the 5k race. The Judges were followed by UMass Dartmouth (68), Wheaton College (68), Emmanuel College (85), Lesley University (110), UMass Boston (149) and Roger Williams University (169).
Wheaton took the top three spots in the women's race and placed four runners in the top five. Sophomore Jordan Silva (North Kingstown, R.I.) picked up the win with her time 12:31. Classmate Georgia Crane (Greenwich, Conn.) snagged second place in 12:40, while sophomore Dagmara Sobczyk (Farmington, Conn.) finished third in 12:43. Senior Molly Metivier (Keene, N.H.) was the first runner to cross the line for the second place Saints, finishing fourth overall with a time of 12:47. Wheaton's Shoshana Kruskal (Newton, Mass.) took fifth with a time of 12:49.
Rounding out the top ten for the women was Emmanuel's Chloe Egan (Burlington, Vt.) in sixth (12:50), UMass Boston's Angelica Pizzi in seventh (12:55), Emmanuel's Julie Roberts (Williamsburg, Mass.) in eighth (13:04), Regis' Siobhan McLaughlin (Derry, N.H.) in ninth (13:11) and Emmanuel's Chloe Pangonis (Keene, N.H.) in tenth place (13:16).
On the men's side, Brandeis was paced by the team's senior captain Ed Colvin (Roslindale, Mass.), who ran down a new course record with his swift time of 16:04. Junior Jarret Harrigan (Ipswich, Mass.) represented the Judges in the second overall spot with his time of 16:16. Wheaton's John Green (Quincy, Mass.) nabbed third in 16:27. UMass Dartmouth's Zach Switaj (Tamworth, N.H.) finished fourth in 16:38, while Lesley's Nick Green (Stoughton, Mass.) crossed the line fifth in 16:41.
Emmanuel's top runner was rookie Sean Colford (Epping, N.H.), who finished sixth overall in 16:42. UMass Dartmouth's Chris Jordan (Taunton, Mass.) was seventh in 16:44 and UMass Boston's Jake Kerin (Quincy, Mass.) was eighth in 16:55. Brandeis runners rounded out the top ten with ninth and tenth place finishes just one second apart by Daniel Leon (New York, N.Y.) in 17:04 and Matt Doran (Hopedale, Mass.) in 17:05.
The Emmanuel College Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams will be back in action next Saturday, September 7th, when they travel to Bristol, R.I. to compete in the Roger Williams University Invitational at Colt State Park.
