Student-Athlete of the Week
May 9, 2011
Emmanuel College's Student-Athlete of the Week is Track & Field record-holder Katasi Kulubya. Kulubya is a junior at Emmanuel and has been a two-year star on both the Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Teams. Kulubya played on the Saints Women's Basketball Team as a freshman, but switched over to Track & Field as a sophomore and has rewritten the Emmanuel indoor and outdoor track record-books.
Kulubya, a native of Anaheim, California, holds four individual sprinting records at Emmanuel, and is a part of four record-holding relay teams. Among the records, Kulubya holds the program-best times for indoor track in the 400m (60.55), 500m 1:23.09) and is a part of the record-setting 4x400m indoor relay team (4:13.93).
The junior sprinter's records on the outdoor track include her personal bests in the 400m (59.31) and 800m (2:26.60). She is also a part of the record-holding 4x100m relay team (51.48) and the 4x400m relay team (4:09.04).
Two of Kulubya's outdoor track records were set this past Saturday in the Division III New England Championships held at MIT in Cambridge, Mass. Kulubya kicked off the day by running her personal best and placing 9th with her time of 59.31 in the 400m. She then ran the lead off leg of the women's record-setting 4x400 team. Kulubya, along with Nathalie Victoria (Brockton, Mass.), Julie Young (Derry, N.H.) and Lauren Atkins (Saugus, Mass.) ran over three seconds faster than their previous best to finish in 8th place with a time of 4:09.04. Kulubya and her team received All-New England honors for their top-eight finish and qualified for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
Kulubya will compete both individually (in the 400m) and with her relay team at the ECAC Championships on May 19th at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
