April 21, 2012
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Saints Men's and Women's Track & Field Teams competed in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Spring Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Emmanuel student-athletes posted eight top-five finishes, two New England Division III Championship qualifiers and one Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship qualifier. Two program records were set and twenty-three personal bests were achieved by Saints on the day.
Freshman sprinter Adam Julien (New Orleans, La.) had a tremendous day, winning one of his individual events and helping the men's 4x800 meter relay team to a record-setting second place finish. Julien sprinted to a 49.36 time in the 400 meters, earning a first place finish. He then captured 6th place in the 200m with a New England Division III qualifying time of 22.65.
Sophomore Nathan Bruno (Lenox, Mass.) also picked up another individual win, as he grabbed 1st place in the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 55.31. Both Julien and Bruno were joined by senior captain Abdi Ibrahim (East Boston, Mass.) and sophomore Chris Baker (Holden, Mass.) on the 4x800 relay squad. The team combined for a 2nd place finish and a new Emmanuel record time of 7:58.20. Their time qualified them for the ECAC Championships and their time on Saturday ranks them 6th in the ECAC.
Senior captain Kathleen King (Hopkinton, Mass.) had a phenomenal day in the field, posting a school record hammer throw and another New England Division III qualifier in the discus. King launched the hammer a PR distance of 103'7". She hurled the discus 111'1" to improve on her Division III qualifying distance.
Fellow senior Katasi Kulubya (Anaheim, Calif.) raced to a 4th place finish in the women's 400m. Her time of 60.44 was an improvement on her Division III New England qualifying time and just missed qualifying her for ECACs. Junior Lauren Gogel (east Longmeadow, Mass.) ran down a personal record in the same event with her time of 65.89. Meaghan Mauer's (South Hadley, Mass.) time of 13:13.18 in the steeplechase was a personal record for the sophomore and earned her 6th place in the event.
Distance runners Joslyn DelSignore (Taunton, Mass.) and Danielle Martin (York, Me.) both ran their PRs in the 5000m. DelSignore placed 5th with a time of 20:12.55 and Martin came in 7th, running 21:51.34.
Both the men's and women's 4x400m relay teams snagged top-five finishes. The Women's team, consisting of Kulubya, Molly Metivier (Keene, N.H.), Nathalie Victoria (Brockton, Mass.) and Julie Young (Derry, N.H.) ran 3rd with a combined time of 4:17.94. On the men's side, David Allen (Hull, Mass.) teamed up with Ben Perdue (West Springfield, Mass.), Eric Donnelly (Halifax, Mass.) and Patrick Callan (Pawling, N.Y.) for a 4th place time of 3:41.33.
