TRACK OPENS SEASON WITH RECORD-SETTING DAY IN WESTFIELD

BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel Men's and Women's Track & Field Teams kicked off the outdoor season on Saturday afternoon, by competing in the Jerry Gravel Classic at Westfield State University. Collectively, the Saints set five program records, qualified for the New England Division III Championships in six events and had one athlete qualify for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships. Emmanuel athletes also achieved 28 personal bests on the day.
Emmanuel freshman sprinter Adam Julien (New Orleans, La.) raced to a 1st place finish in the men's 400m. Julien's personal best time of 49.02 set a new Emmanuel program record and qualified him for both the Division III New Englands, as well as the ECACs in the opening meet of the season. Julien posted a5th place finish in the 200m with a PR time of 23:03.
Julien also anchored the men's 4x400m relay team, which place 3rd overall. Julien, along with Ben Perdue (West Springfield, Mass.), Chris Baker (Holden, Mass.) and Dave Allen (Hull, Mass.) have also qualified for New Englands with their time of 3:29.14.
The Emmanuel women qualified in the same event. The veteran Saints, which included Katasi Kulubya (Anaheim, Calif.), Nathalie Victoria (Brockton, Mass.), Shannon McCabe (Charlestown, R.I.) and Julie Young (Derry, N.H.), placed 2nd overall with a qualifying time of 4:15.88.
McCabe also had a terrific day individually, as she placed 6th in the 100m hurdles. Her time of 16.42 set a new Emmanuel program record and qualified the senior for the Division III New Englands. Teammate, Katasi Kulubya, placed 8th in the 800m with a new record time of 2:26.44
Sophomore Nathan Bruno (Lenox, Mass.) ran down a record in the men's 800m race. Bruno placed 4th overall with a New England qualifying time of 1:56.96. Abdi Ibrahim (East Boston, Mass.) ran 8th overall in the men's 10k. Ibrahim's time of 34:08.51 was a personal best for the senior captain.
The Saints recorded several sold performances in the field events. Leading the way was senior tri-captain Kathleen King (Hopkinton, Mass.), who had two great events. King set a new Emmanuel record in the hammer with a throw of 101.2". She also qualified for the New Englands with her distance of 105'1" in the discus.
Emmanuel will return to the track on Saturday, March 31st, at Tufts University's Snowflake Classic. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:00am.
