OUTDOOR TRACK OPENS SEASON AT WESLEYAN SPRING CLASSIC
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Emmanuel College outdoor track & field squad opened its spring schedule Saturday afternoon competing at the Wesleyan Spring Classic. Due to weather conditions, the meet was held indoors.

The Saints had a strong showing in the women's 1,500m event as sophomore Reilly Boyle (Wells, Maine) took advantage of the extra week inside by running to a new indoor school record clocking in at 5:24.32. Junior Nicole Varca (Wethersfield, Conn.), sophomores Mimi Duncan (Portsmouth, N.H.), Katherine Holmberg (Easton, Mass.) and Alicia Barry (Hingham, Mass.) also recorded new personal bests in the race.
The men also excelled in the 1,500m race as senior Ian Chamenko (Beacon Falls, Conn.) and freshman Patrick Carty (Sweeden, Maine) and Erik Brobst (Freeport, Maine) all ran new PR times in the race. Chamenko clocked in at 4:25.97, Carty at 4:35.10 and Brobst at 4:46.89.
Emmanuel placed in the top 10 a total of 15 times during the meet with nine women and six men earning points for the Saints.
Junior Francisco Tavares (Boston, Mass.) finished first in the 400m race by besting the field with a time of 52.52 seconds. Jacquelyn Schneider (Weymouth, Mass.) also placed in the women's 400m race finishing third with a PR time of 67.59. Schneider also finished fifth overall in the long jump and sixth in the 60m hurdle race for a strong all-around performance.
The EC throwers enjoyed a strong afternoon with four Saints earning top-10 honors in the Shot Put. Freshman Amie Knowles (Seabrook, N.H.) finished third with a throw of 29'7.25" for a new PR, sophomore Cara Welsh (Shrewsbury, Mass.) also PR'ed with a fifth-place throw of 28'8.25" followed by a sixth-place PR toss from freshman Shannon Donahue (Manchester, N.H.) at 28'4.50". Senior Cameron Anderson (Watertown, Mass.) placed second on the men's side with a throw of 41'0.50" while teammate Constantino Politis (Saugus, Mass.) placed sixth in the Weight Throw with a heave of 30'3.50".
In the sprints, Cameron Atherton (Rowley, Mass.) finished fifth in the 200m race with a PR time of 24.20 seconds and ninth in the 100m race finishing with a PR of 12.08 seconds. Tavares also placed in the 200m, crossing the line at 24.37 seconds which was good for sixth place.
Rounding out the Saints in the top ten were senior Ashley Brooks (Danvers, Mass.) and sophomore Carly Jones (Lake Placid, Mass.). Brooks finished second in the high jump with a leap of 4'10.25" while Jones finished ninth in both the 60m hurdles and long jump, recording a PR time in the hurdles of 10.67 seconds.
The Saints return to action this coming weekend on Saturday, April 1 for the Tufts Snowflake Classic in Medford, Mass.
