TRACK TEAMS TURN UP THE HEAT AT BRANDEIS' POYAU INVITATIONAL

WALTHAM, Mass. - The Emmanuel Men's and Women's Track & Field Teams took to the indoor track at Brandeis University's Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Saints competed against three Division II programs and four other Division III teams in the local meet. While the Emmanuel men finished 6th of eight teams and the women placed 7th of 8, Emmanuel athletes recorded four New England Division III Championship qualifying performances, a new program record in the weight throw and twenty-one personal bests on the track and in the field events.
Senior sprinter Katasi Kulubya (Anaheim, Calif.) improved on her New England Division III Championship qualifying performance last week in the 400m. Kulubya placed 2nd in this week's race with a time of 61.46. After qualifying last week in the 800m, junior Julie Young (Derry, N.H.) qualified for New Englands this week in the 600m. Young ran 2nd with a qualifying time of 1:44.98. Senior Brittany Sorice (Dover, N.H.) placed 4th in the same event with a time of 1:51.51.
Senior captains Jordan Coulombe (Saco, Me.) and Abdi Ibrahim (East Boston, Mass.) each placed 3rd in their respective races. Coulombe ran an 8.96 55m hurdle race, while Ibrahim ran 4:27.96 in his 1 Mile event. Sophomore Michael Morris (Stoughton, Mass.) cut 6 seconds off his personal best in the Mile, racing to a 4:47.70 PR.
Sophomore Nathan Bruno (Lenox, Mass.) took the 4th slot in the 600m with a time of 1:26.26. Freshman Adam Julien (New Orleans, La.) finished 2nd out of the field of 35 sprinters in the men's 200m. Julien's time of 23.72 was a collegiate personal best.
Both the men's and women's 4x400m relay teams qualified for the Division III New Englands. The Emmanuel men, consisting of Bruno, Wesley Cowles (Hebron, Conn.), Ibrahim and Julien, raced to a 2nd place finish with a time of 3:33.31. The Emmanuel women's team including, Kulubya, Nathalie Victoria (Brockton, Mass.), Sorice and Young, ran a 5th place time of 4:15.84.
Senior captain Gregory Brown (Norton, Mass.) led the Saints in the field, as he tacked on 8.5" to his own school record in the weight throw to grab a 32'10.50" mark in the event. Women's team captain Kathleen King (South Easton, Mass.) took 4th place in the weight throw with a mark of 36'2".
The Saints have now completed their 1st semester schedule. Emmanuel will return to the track after the winter break, when they travel to Tufts University for an invitational meet on Saturday, January 14, 2012.
