SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The first-year duo of Chelsea Smith (Manchester, Conn.) and Pearl Vercruysse (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) earned All-New England honors on Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Division III New England Championships hosted at Springfield College.

THE LEAD: The first-year duo of Chelsea Smith (Manchester, Conn.) and Pearl Vercruysse (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) earned All-New England honors on Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Division III New England Championships hosted at Springfield College.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Vercruysse opened the afternoon with the mile race and was running a great race before slowing down to finish 10th overall in the field.
- Smith ran in the 400m race and was in second place through the first 200m before getting bumped and tripping on the final lap resulting in a DNF.
- Both athletes regrouped for their afternoon events as Vercruysse finished seventh overall in the 800m race to earn All-New England accolade with a time of 2:22.20
- Smith followed with a first place finish in the 200m race with a time of 25.80 seconds to become the first female Track & Field athlete at Emmanuel to win an event at the New England D-III Championships.
OF NOTE
- Smith is currently ranked 16th nationally in the 200m and 39th in the 400m race
- Vercruysse is ranked 40th nationally in the mile
WHAT'S NEXT
Both Saints will compete at the Boston University Last Chance Meet on Sunday, February 25 hoping to improve their times and qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships.
