TAVARES WINS 400m AT MIT GORDON KELLY INVITATIONAL

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- Junior sprinter Francisco Tavares (Boston, Mass.) won the 400m indoor event this Saturday at the Gordon Kelly Invitational hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Tavares finished the race in a 51.9 seconds and the competition could not keep pace.  Later at the meet, Tavares ran a 23.69 in the 200m placing third.

Senior distance runner Ian Chamenko (Beacon Falls, Conn.) had a solid showing in the mile placing second with a 4:36.34 while freshman Phillip Malm (Worcester, Mass.) placed fourth in the 600m, running a 1:35.42.  A competitive time of 3:01.65 by freshman Justin Scott (Woburn, Mass) in the 1000m would be good for sixth place for mid distance runner. Sophomore Cameron Atherton (Rowley, Mass.) set a personal best in the 60m with a 7.40 placing eighth.

Saints runners on the women's side saw success as well.  In the 1-mile race sophomore Mimi Duncan (Portsmouth, N.H.) finished in seventh with a 5:51.18 time, sophomore Katherine Holmberg (No. Easton, Mass.) came in eight place with a personal best 5:55.09. Three Emmanuel runners placed in the 600m race including sophomore Jordyn Gonsor (Springfield, Mass.) who ran a 1:44.02 which was good for third, junior Nicole Varca (Wethersfield, Conn.) finishing in 1:45.72 for fifth and sophomore Reilly Boyle (Wells, Maine) finishing in 1:47.46 which was good for sixth. Gonsor and Boyle both recorded personal bests in the race.  Gonsor, Varca, Boyle and Duncan teamed up to comprise the Saints 4 x 800m team and placed second running the race in 10:32.17.  The low time qualified the team for the NCAA Regional meet.

Freshman Kaitlyn Killion (Bellingham, Mass.) set her own personal best in the 60m dash were she finished in 9.63 seconds.

In the field events the Saints saw success in the high jump where senior Ashley Brooks (Danvers, Mass.) finished fifth with a 4'11.75'' jump.  The Saints also set personal bests in the shot put as freshman Jacquelyn Schneider (Weymouth, Mass.) threw 25'11.5'' and Christopher Rosario threw 26'3'' on the men's side.

The Saints return to action next weekend in the D-III New England Championships, the women will return to MIT and the men will compete at Tufts University on Saturday, February 18.
