Emmanuel College will be among the 87 institutions represented at the Indoor Championships this weekend. The two-day event will begin on Friday, March 6th and will feature 72 men's teams and 79 women's programs. In last year's event, held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston, Mass., Bates College laid claim to its second-ever men's championship, while Amherst College earned its first-ever title on the women's side.
The Bobcats closed strong to take the men's crown last year, recording six top-eight finishes on the second day of competition, including three first place showings. Senior Sean Enos (Lynnfield, Mass.) will return for Bates a year after winning both the shot put and weight throw events. Enos was also victorious in both events at this year's New England Championships, held on February 27-28 at Boston University. Departed senior Noah Graboys (Glencoe, Ill.) also earned gold for Bates last year, taking the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:27.87. Senior captain John Stansel (Newburyport, Mass.) will also be a key performer for Bates this coming weekend. Stansel finished first amongst all Division III runners in the mile-run at last week's New England Championships.
In last year's women's championship, Amherst edged second place finisher, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, by a mere 1.5 points. Departed senior Naomi Bates was the Lord Jeffs' big winner, taking the title and leaping to a meet record in the long jump with a mark of 5.85m. Sophomores Kiana Herold (Sebastopol, Calif.) and Karen Blake (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) will return to this year's championship after both recording top-five finishes a year ago. Herold registered third place in the high jump (1.69m) in 2014, while Blake claimed a fourth place finish in the 60-meter dash (7.81 seconds). Senior Kelli Ellingson (Boise, Idaho) will also return for Amherst, following a sixth place finish in the 1,000-meter run last season.
In all, 17 meet records were recorded in last year's championships, nine on the men's side and eight by the women's field.
