TRACK OPENS OUTDOOR SEASON AT WESLEYAN’S SPRING BREAK INVITE
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Emmanuel College Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Teams kicked off the outdoor season by competing in Wesleyan University’s Spring Break Invite on Saturday afternoon. The Saints ran well in their first met of the spring season, posting 16 top-five finishes, including five Division III New England Championship qualifying performances and one ECAC New England qualifier.
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Emmanuel College Men's and Women's Track & Field Teams kicked off the outdoor season by competing in Wesleyan University's Spring Break Invite on Saturday afternoon. The Saints ran well in their first met of the spring season, posting 16 top-five finishes, including five Division III New England Championship qualifying performances and one ECAC New England qualifier.
Freshman Ashley Brooks (Danvers, Mass.) and senior captain Kelly Ulf (Lunenburg, Mass.) led the Saints in the field, topping the podium in the women's high jump. Brooks captured 1st place with her jump of 5'1. Ulf snagged 2nd place, jumping 4'11.75". Both athletes' jumps qualified them for the Division III New England Championships.
Ulf went on to notch 2nd place in the long jump, reaching 15'9". On the men's side, senior captain Ben Perdue (West Springfield, Mass.) also took 2nd place with his leap of 20'4.50". Perdue captured a top-five finish on the track as well, crossing the line 4th in the men's 100m with his time of 11.66.
Senior Nate Bruno (Lenox, Mass.) returned to action with a pair of victories, topping the ticket in the men's 110mH and in the men's 800m. Bruno's 110mH time of 15.51 was a personal best and qualified him for the ECAC Championship. He also ran a 2:00.69 time in 800m.
Two EC athletes finished second behind Bruno in both events. Junior Ryan Thomas (Wakefield, R.I.) ran well, despite his knee injury and took 2nd place in the 110mH with his Division III New England qualifying time of 16.16. Thomas also qualified for the Championships in the men's 200m, racing to his PR time of 22.99 and picking up his second 2nd place finish on the day.
Senior captain Chris Baker (Holden, Mass.) raced to a 2nd place finish in the 800m with his time of 2:01.30. Senior Patrick Callan (Pawling, N.Y.) ran 5th in the 800m with his time of 2:07.32.
Junior Chloe Egan (Burlington, Vt.) took home 4th place in the 400mH with her time of 73.21. Senior captain Meghan Mauer (South Hadley, Mass.) grabbed 7th in 76.22. Sophomore Zoe Pierce-Dickens (Franklin, Vt.) sprinted to her personal best time of 65.57 in the 400m, crossing the line 5th overall.
The Emmanuel distance runners also faired well on Saturday. Sophomore Richard Thompson (Norwood, Mass.) chased down 1st place in the men's 3000m. Thompson's time of 9:47.85 was a personal record. Classmate Thomas Tallo (Lincoln, R.I.) ran his PR time of 10:20.23 for 6th place in the same event. Freshman Ian Chamenko (Beacon Falls, Conn.) ran 4th in the 1500m with a time of 4:26.49. On the women's side, Julie Roberts (Williamsburg, Mass.) crossed the line 2nd in the 3000m with a time of 12:15.76.
Freshman Katherine Zombik (Holyoke, Mass.) notched a trio of personal records on the day, including her 4th place time of 16.93 in the 100mH, her 31.18 sprint in the 200m and her 63'4" launch of the javelin. Also notable on the afternoon was senior Richard Morrow's (Woodstock, Conn.) personal best throws of 41'8" in the discus and 84'8" in the javelin.
The Saints are back in action next Saturday, March 29th, when they travel to Mount Holyoke College for an invitational meet beginning at 11:00 AM.
