SAINTS OVERPOWER MOUNT IDA; ADVANCE TO GNAC SEMIFINALS
Nov. 4, 2008
BOSTON, Mass. - The senior duo of Amanda Machado (Swansea, MA) and Lindsey Parker (New Bedford, MA) combined for match-highs in digs and kills, respectively, as the Emmanuel Women's Volleyball Team picked up a conference tournament win over Mount Ida College on Tuesday night in the Jean Yawkey Center. The Saints swept the three-set match, defeating the Mustangs, 25-14, 25-15, and 25-18. Emmanuel will now advance to the tournament semifinals on Thursday night (11/6).
Machado's defense was flawless, as time after time, the senior libero foiled the Mustangs' attacks. Machado collected a career-high 30 digs on the night and owned the Saints' defense in the backrow. Machado's 30 digs also marks a program-high for digs in a three-set match.
Parker slammed down 11 kills in 24 total attempts to lead the Saints' offense. The senior co-captain also notched 8 digs and 2 service aces. Freshman Rebecca Stanton (Quincy, MA) also played stellar ball, tallying 8 kills in 19 attempts. Freshman hitter Jenna Ross (Centerburg, OH) chipped in with 5 kills and 6 digs, while junior middle Nicole McAllister (Hampden, ME) added 3 blocks and 3 kills in the win. Emmanuel's freshman setter Kathryne Olsen (Fairhaven, MA) dished out 26 assists to go along with her 9 digs for the Saints.
With this win, Emmanuel improved to 17-13 on the season and will advance to the semifinals of the GNAC Tournament. The Saints will play in one of the two semifinal matches on Thursday night. Emmanuel will take on the winner of top-seeded Rivier College and 8th-seeded Lasell College. The winners of the Thursday's semifinal matches will play for the GNAC Championship on Saturday afternoon (11/8).
