Oct. 31, 2009
BOSTON, Mass. - The Emerson College Volleyball Team cruised to a three-set sweep of the Emmanuel Saints in the last match of Saturday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match. After both the Saints and Lions downed Saint Joseph College (CT), they took battle against each other in the nightcap. The Lions topped the Saints, 3-0, to complete a perfect season of conference play.
Emmanuel needed a win in order to hold a share of first place in the conference standings, along with Emerson and Johnson & Wales. A win for the Lions would give them their first-ever undefeated season in GNAC play. Emerson prevailed in three sets, 25-22, 25-20, 25-16, and improved to 27-6 on the season and finished at 12-0 in the league. The loss dropped Emmanuel to 17-12 overall and 10-2 in the GNAC.
Emmanuel's offense was led by junior outside hitter Megan Murray (Killingworth, Conn.) and senior right side Diana Grimaldi (Sandy Hook, Conn.), who each slammed down 8 kills for the Saints. Sophomore setter Kathryne Olsen (Fairhaven, Mass.) added 4 kills and dished out 24 assists, while freshman libero Samantha Andazola (Queen Creek, Ariz.) and sophomore outside hitter Jenna Ross (Centerburg, Ohio) led the defense with 19 and 17 digs, respectively.
Emmanuel will host a Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinal match on Tuesday night, November 3rd. The Saints received the third seed in the tournament and will host the 6th-seeded Sharks of Simmons College at 7pm in the Jean Yawkey Center.
