WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TOPS MITCHELL, 3-0; DROPS 3-2 MATCH WITH JWU

Providence, R.I. - The Johnson & Wales women's volleyball team swept a tri-match with Emmanuel and Mitchell at the Harborside Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon. Emmanuel was 1-1 while Mitchell had an 0-2 mark for the day.
The day marked the final regular season home contests for seniors Samantha Cureton (Chester, Pa.), Emma Anderson (Meriden, Conn.), Catherine Bravo (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) and Nikki Balchunas (Brockton, Mass.).
In the opener, Johnson & Wales posted a thrilling 3-2 (18-25, 25-16, 17-25, 27-25, 15-9) victory against Emmanuel in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest. Johnson & Wales was led by Bravo with a triple double, recording 17 kills, 26 digs and 28 set assists. Balchunas added 11 kills and 12 digs while Anderson and junior Audrey Warren (Haverhill, Mass) each had 10 kills in the victory for the Wildcats. Emmanuel was led by junior Rebecca Stanton (Quincy, Mass.) with 14 kills while sophomore Samantha Andazola (Queen Creek, Ariz.) had nine kills and 20 digs for the Saints. Junior Kathryne Olsen (Fairhaven, Mass.) notched 35 set assists in the setback for Emmanuel.
Emmanuel posted a 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-18) victory against Mitchell in the second match of the day. Stanton paced Emmanuel with eight kills, three blocks and four digs while sophomore Rachel Swiezynski (Exeter, N.H.) tallied 17 set assists and seven digs for the Wildcats. Mitchell was led by sophomore Shayna Diggs (Gales Ferry, Conn.) with eight kills and one dig while senior Jennifer Bordonaro (Winsted, Conn.) had 17 set assists, 11 digs and six kills for the Mariners.
In the final match of the day, JWU recorded a 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-18) win over Mitchell. Sophomore Karlie Haack (Selkirk, N.Y.) and Cureton each recorded seven kills in the win for the Wildcats while freshman Ashley Rey (Miami, Fla.) had 16 set assists and four saves. Senior Stephanie McKeon (Ledyard, Conn.) notched six kills and six digs in the setback for Mitchell.
With the two wins, JWU improves to 19-9 overall and 9-0 in the GNAC. Emmanuel is now 10-13, 2-4 in league play while Mitchell is 4-12 on the season.
The Saints will host Simmons this Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
