SAINTS SPLIT IN THURSDAY'S GNAC TRI-MATCH

BOSTON, MA - The Emmanuel Women's Volleyball Team won one of two matches on Thursday night in a GNAC tri-match played at Emerson College's Piano Row. The Saints opened the night with a 3-1 loss to host Emerson, but rebounded to take home a 3-1 win over Lasell College. With the split, Emmanuel is now 8-10 overall and 4-1 in conference play. Emerson swept both matches and improved to 12-7 overall and 5-2 in the GNAC
In the opener, Emerson dominated the first set with a 25-12 victory. The Lions roared out to a 10-1 lead and never looked back. Emmanuel rallied to take the second set by a 25-17 count. The Saints took a 14-7 lead on an Emerson kill error, and stretched the margin to 18-10. The Lions scored seven of the next 11 points, but Emmanuel closed the set on an Emerson service error, two aces and an Emerson attacking error.
The Lions controlled the third set from the start, breaking out to an 11-4 lead. Emmanuel rallied to close the gap to 12-10 on kills by sophomore Rebecca Stanton (Quincy, Mass.), senior Lindsey Parker (New Bedford, Mass.) and freshman Jenna Ross (Centerburg, Ohio), as well as a Lion ball handling error. Following an Emerson time out, the Lions ran off six-straight points for an 18-10 lead. The teams traded the next six points before Emerson served out the set with two aces and a kill.
Emerson broke out to an 11-3 advantage in the fourth set, and led 19-10 before the Saints rallied with four straight points. A Lion kill and a service ace from sophomore Sara Rutan (Santa Clarita, Calif.) upped the lead to 21-14 and forced a Saints' timeout. Emmanuel scored three-straight points out of the break before consecutive kills gave the Lions a 23-17 edge. Three Emmanuel points later, Emerson answered with a kill, and after another Emmanuel point, the Lions laid down the match point kill.
For the Saints, Parker led the way with 9 kills and 3 digs, while Ross added 5 kills and a team-high 12 digs. Freshman setter Kathryne Olsen (Fairhaven, MA) dished out 23 assists to go along with her 5 kills. Junior Nicole McAllister (Hampden, ME) tallied 5 solo and 2 assisted blocks, while Stanton chipped in with 5 kills in the effort.
In the Saints' 3-1 win over Lasell, Emmanuel came out sluggish in the opening set, falling to the Lasers, 18-25. The Saints rallied to win the next three sets, 25-23, 25-21, and 25-14. Parker again led the offense with 16 kills. Stanton totaled 14 kills and 3 solo blocks. Senior Amanda Machado (Swansea, MA) tallied a team-high 23 digs, while sophomore Megan Clary (Cumberland, RI) came away with 16 digs for the Saints. Olsen recorded a double-double with 48 assists & 10 digs. Ross ran off 8 kills and 13 digs, while junior opposite Diana Grimaldi (Sandy Hook, CT) notched 11 digs in the win.
The Saints will host a pair of matches this week, beginning on Columbus Day. Emmanuel will host the Rams of Suffolk University on Monday (10/13) in the Jean Yawkey Center in a 7pm start. The Saints will then host Keene State on Thursday night (10/16) at 7pm.
