SAINTS DROP SEASON-OPENER TO ROGER WILLIAMS

BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel Women's Volleyball Team came out strong on their home court in the Jean Yawkey Center for their first match of the 2010 season, taking early leads in all three sets, but falling 17-25, 20-25, and 20-25 to the Hawks of Roger Williams University in a non-conference match. With the win, the Hawks improved to 4-1 on the year, while the Saints fell to 0-1.
Knotting things up at 9-9, the Saints matched up well against the Hawks out of the gate in the first set of the night. The Hawks then rallied to a commanding 18-11 lead and went on to win. In the second set, the Saints scored first again, but a few quick 3- and 4-point rallies put the game out of reach. Late in the set, The Saints crept back into it, but fell short 20-25.
Scoring first for the third set in a row, the Saints opened up an 8-2 lead, but momentum shifted when the Hawks came back and went on a 7-2 run, putting the score at 10-9 for the Saints. The set see-sawed to the end, when the Hawks tacked on a 4-point run to win 25-20, and take the match, 3-0.
Rebecca Stanton (Quincy, Mass.) led the Emmanuel offense for the night, tallying 6 kills. Jenna Ross (Centerburg, Ohio) also played a key role in the attack, throwing down another 4. The Saints defended well against the strong Hawk offense, with Megan Clary (Cumberland, R.I.), Ross, and Samantha Andazola (Queen Creek, Ariz.) having 10 digs each. Junior setter Kathryne Olsen (Fairhaven, Conn.) dished out 13 assists in the effort.
With the loss, Emmanuel is 0-1 on the year. They will play in the Endicott College Invitational Tournament this weekend (9-10/9-11).
