BOSTON – For the first time since 2018, Emmanuel women's volleyball has qualified for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Postseason, clinching the No. 7 seed in the conference playoffs after a 16-10 (9-6 GNAC) regular season record.
As the seven-seed, the Saints open up their postseason run by hosting their first playoff game at the Jean Yawkey Center since 2015 against the No. 10 seed Colby-Sawyer Chargers, who finished the season 7-22 (5-10 GNAC).
The GNAC Play-In Round match with the Chargers is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Jean Yawkey Center on Monday, Nov. 6.
The Saints offense is led by sophomore Isabella Marquez (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), who averages 3.16 kills per set, ranking fifth-best in the GNAC this season. First-year Kason Huynh (Mission Viejo, Calif.), a multi-positional in the Saints rotation is next in kills per set average at 1.57. The rookie adds 3.77 assists and 2.55 digs per set for the Saints.
Senior Brigid Moriarty (Westfield, Mass.) adds 4.45 assists per set for the team while her 45 service aces this season leads the Saints. Fellow senior Seana Phillips (Middleboro, Mass.) is one of the conference's best middle blockers, averaging 0.86 blocks per set, good for second-best in the GNAC.
Juniors Ally Majenski (Marshfield, Mass.) and Katie Mollberg (Naples, Fla.), and first-year Delaney Skourtis (Tilton, N.H.) all average over two kills per set for a well-balanced Chargers offense.
Majenski leads Colby-Sawyer with 2.41 kills per set, Mollburg is close behind at 2.29 kills per set while Skourtis is third on the team at 2.02 kills per set.
Setting up all the kills for the Chargers trio is junior Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.), who ranks second in the GNAC in assists per set at 6.55. In addition to her setting, Patnode leads Colby-Sawyer with 42 service aces this season.
At the libero position, Saints junior Paula Tanguilig (Sandwich, Mass.) and Chargers junior Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.) rank sixth and fourth, respectively, in digs per set. Tanguilig averages 4.24 digs while Fontes is slightly ahead at 4.39.
The regular season match on Oct. 21 favored the Saints in a straight sets sweep. Marquez had 10 kills for the Saints while Huynh added eight kills in the win. Mollberg led the Chargers with six kills.
Colby-Sawyer's last appearance in the GNAC Playoffs was in 2019, falling in the quarterfinals in straight sets to Suffolk. Emmanuel's 2018 appearance resulted in a 3-0 loss at Rivier in the GNAC Quarterfinals.
The winner of Monday's match returns to play the next evening, Tuesday, Nov. 7, traveling to Regis for a 7:00 p.m. match in the GNAC Quarterfinal Round.
