BOSTON – After a close battle through two sets, the Emmanuel Saints women's volleyball program finished strong, hitting .385 in the final set, claiming a straight sets win (25-19, 25-17, 25-12) victory over Fisher College on Friday night at Pappas Gymnasium.
The Saints win on Opening Night gives them their first win in their first match of the season since a victory over Bridgewater State on Sept. 4, 2015, breaking a six-game skid in season-openers over that span.
After trading points in the opening set, Emmanuel took control with eight consecutive points, stretching a narrow lead into a 15-6 edge. The Falcons managed to answer right back, going on a six-point run, but that was matched immediately with six straight points by EC, as Emmanuel held a 21-12 lead. Fisher cut to within five but an attack error on set point gave the Saints a 25-19 set win.
In set two, the Saints used a come-from-behind effort to claim victory. Trailing nearly the entire set, the Saints finally took control down the stretch, closing the second on a 12-1 spurt, turning a 16-13 Fisher lead into a 25-17 Saints set win.
In the final set, Emmanuel kept Fisher at a safe distance with three separate three-point runs. Much like the second set, the third set finished with the Saints going on a strong run, this time shutting out the Falcons in the final seven points, earning a 25-12 third set win and a straight sets victory.
Saints sophomore Wiktoria Galazyn (Plainville, Conn.) led the match with nine kills to go along with 11 digs. Fellow sophomore Isabella Marquez (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) added seven kills and a match-best 14 digs. First-year Kason Huynh (Mission Viejo, Calif.) got her EC career off to a hot start, filling the stat sheet with four kills, 12 assists, and seven service aces.
Fisher sophomore Lilliana Figueroa (Fajardo, P.R.) led the Falcons with four kills. First-year Sofia Campos (Guaynabo, P.R.) added three kills and a team-high 13 kills.
The Saints (1-0) are back on Saturday, Sept. 9 as they welcome Wentworth to the Jean Yawkey Center for a 10:00 a.m. match. The Falcons (0-1) travel to Nichols on Sept. 5 for a 7:00 p.m. match.
