2010 SEASON IN REVIEW
Dec. 21, 2010
The Emmanuel Women's Tennis Team wrapped up the 2010 season with a combined record of 8-6 and a 5-3 mark in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. The Saints lost just three regular season conference matches and entered the GNAC playoffs as the 4th seed. Emmanuel's season ended with a heartbreaking 5-4 upset by 5th-seeded Johnson & Wales University. The Saints placed two players on the GNAC All-Conference Team and six individuals were honored by the conference for their stellar play during the season.
Emmanuel's top singles player, Taylor Dey (Woodbridge, Conn.), posted an incredible 8-2 record at No. 1 singles in 2010. The sophomore dropped just one GNAC match and was named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll twice during the season (9/27/10 and 10/4/10). Dey received 1st Team All-Conference honors for the second consecutive year.
Dey's classmate, Jenna Reid (Lincoln, R.I.), also notched a great sophomore campaign. Reid went 7-4 overall and 4-2 in GNAC play from her No. 3 singles slot. Along with Dey, Reid received All-GNAC honors for the second year in a row, as she was named 2nd Team All-Conference.
Senior captain Megan Harrington (Leicester, Mass.) owned the No. 2 singles position for the Saints. Harrington faced tough competition in 2010 and finished the year at 3-7 overall in singles matches. Harrington teamed up with newcomer Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, N.J.) for a 6-3 record at second doubles.
Fellow senior, Alexandra Shakra (Bedford, N.H.) wrapped up her collegiate career with a 6-5 singles mark in 2010, playing in the No. 5 position for the Saints.
Head Coach Rob Miller, who just completed his 11th season at the helm, and Assistant Coach Molly Honan were very impressed with the play of their freshmen class. Along with Konecnik, rookies Amanda Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) and Kate Biffinger (Avon, Conn.) also saw solid action in the Emmanuel line-up this season.
Konecnik earned the No. 4 singles position, but also played several matches at No. 3 singles. The freshman recorded a 10-3 singles season, to go along with her 6-3 doubles campaign. Over the course of the season, Konecnik was named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll three times (9/13/10, 9/27/10 and 10/11/10). She also represented the Saints on the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
Woznicki was paired up with Dey to compete on the Saints No. 1 doubles team. The duo went 4-6 on the year and 2-3 in conference play, facing all of the opponents' top doubles teams. Woznicki also posted a great 5-2 singles record, competing in the No. 6 position for Emmanuel. She was named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll on October 4th this season.
Biffinger teamed up with Reid on the Saints' third doubles team. The two were 4-2 on the season. Biffinger's play put the rookie on the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll for the week ending on October 16th.
Junior Lauren Lesko (Plymouth, Mass.) also received conference honors. Lesko was named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll on October 11th after winning back-to-back singles matches in straight sets. Classmate Erin Thornton (Worcester, Mass.) continued her unbeaten streak through the 2010 season, as she went 2-0 this year. Thornton is now 6-0 over the past two years and 7-1 in her three-year career at Emmanuel.
The Saints will lose two seniors to graduation this May, in Harrington and Shakra. However, Coaches Miller and Honan will return twelve veterans for the 2011 season, as Emmanuel looks to win the program's third GNAC Championship.
