EMMANUEL ATHLETES MAKE STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER
Oct. 4, 2010
BOSTON, Mass. - Several of Emmanuel College's athletic teams took part in the American Cancer Society's 18th Annual "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk this past weekend. The walk, which was held on Sunday, October 3rd, began at 8:30am at the Hatch Shell Memorial on the Charles River Esplanade and included a 5-mile loop around the river. Student-athletes from Emmanuel's Tennis, Dance and Cheerleading Teams were among the 40,000 walkers making strides against breast cancer.
Along with completing the 5-mile loop, the Emmanuel Women's Tennis Team raised and donated close to \$1,000.00 to the American Cancer Society. The thousands of walkers on Sunday combined to raise over \$3 million dollars in total. The walk is the nation's oldest and largest one-day breast cancer walk. It has raised nearly \$42 million for the fight against breast cancer since its inception in 1993.
The Emmanuel College Dance and Cheer Teams volunteered at the event. The Cheer Team worked at the finish line as "finish-line greeters," welcoming all of the walkers at the end of the 5-mile route. In addition to making a large monetary donation, Emmanuel's Dance Team performed on stage at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade in front of all of the participants and event volunteers.
Emmanuel's Head Cheer Coach Melissa Eannuzzo described the event as "a huge success." "It was so emotional seeing people from all walks of life come together for one reason...to help raise money for a cure to this horrible disease. To see the smiles on everyone's faces when they crossed the finish line was very rewarding. This was the first year that the Emmanuel Cheer Team volunteered at the breast cancer walk, but it won't be the last. We look forward to being a part of this experience for many years to come," commented Eannuzzo.
