WILDCATS SLASH SAINTS IN FINAL REGULAR SEASON MATCH

East Providence, R.I. - The Emmanuel College Tennis Team suffered a tough Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss on Saturday to Johnson & Wales University. The 6-3 loss dropped the Saints from a three-way tie in second place down to fifth place in the conference standings. Emmanuel wrapped up the regular season at 10-4 overall and 5-3 in GNAC play. JWU improved to 6-6 on the season and 5-3 in the league.
The match was played indoors at Centre Court in East Providence, R.I. The Wildcats took two of the three matches in doubles action. Emmanuel's doubles win came in the second position, when Megan Harrington (Leceister, Mass.) and Catherine Dunphy (Duxbury, Mass.) defeated Tammy Saunders and Aubrie Poe, 8-6. Harrington and Dunphy finished the regular season at 9-1 in doubles play. The Saints dropped the first and third doubles matches to the Wildcats by a score of, 8-4.
Singles play began with the match score at 2-1 in favor of JWU. Emmanuel posted wins in the 1st and 2nd singles positions, but fell in the other four slots. Freshman Taylor Dey (Woodbridge, Conn.) topped Haley Nutter in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. The rookie wrapped up the regular season at 11-1 in singles matches.
Senior co-captain Nory Hayes (Newport, R.I.) eased past her JWU opponent without giving up a game, winning 6-0, 6-0. Hayes finishes the regular season at 9-3 overall. The Wildcats posted straight-set victories in all of the other singles matches.
With the win over the Saints, the Wildcats moved into fourth place in the conference standings. Emmanuel will be seeded 5th in the upcoming GNAC Tournament. The Saints will now play at 4th-seeded Johnson & Wales on Wedesday, October 21st, in the GNAC Quarterfinals.
