TENNIS TEAM CELEBRATES SENIOR DAY WITH 8-1 WIN

BOSTON, MA - The Emmanuel Women's Tennis Team won back-to-back matches over the holiday weekend, with a 9-0 shutout at Albertus Magnus College on Saturday and an 8-1 win over Saint Joseph College at home on Monday. The Saints celebrated the four-year career of Rachel Strauss (Westwood, MA), the lone senior on the squad, in Emmanuel's last regular season home match on Monday afternoon.
Strauss has played in a total of 68 matches for Emmanuel (51 singles matches and 17 doubles matches). She has accumulated a 4-year record of 30-38 with a 20-21 singles mark and a 10-7 doubles record. Strauss has also played in a career total of five Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament matches for the Saints. She played her final regular season home match at the Winsor School courts on October 13th, as the Saints routed visiting Saint Joseph College, 8-1. Emmanuel opened up play with 8-2 wins in all three doubles matches. Junior captain Nory Hayes (Newport, RI) teamed up with sophomore Megan Harrington (Leicester, MA) for the win at first doubles. Junior Caitrin Dunn (Toms River, NJ) and sophomore Catherine Dunphy (Duxbury, MA) took the win at 2nd doubles, while the sophomore team of Taylor Kelly (Poughkeepsie, NY) and Brianna Murphy (Wilbraham, MA) celebrated their fifth win of the season at 3rd doubles.
Strauss played a tough match at first singles, but was defeated, 6-1, 6-1. Hayes returned to action with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at second singles. Harrington won her 6th match of the year with a 6-3, 6-2 win at third singles.
Sophomore Alexandra Shakra (Bedford, NH) won easily at 4th singles, 6-0, 6-2. Dunphy improved to 7-4 on the season, after a 6-4, 6-0 win at 5th singles. Freshman Victoria Trull (Lowell, MA) gave Emmanuel the 8th point of the day with a 6-1, 6-4 win in her sixth singles slot.
With this win, the Saints improved to 7-5 overall and 4-3 in GNAC play. Emmanuel has one remaining regular season match, before advancing to the GNAC post-season tournament. The Saints will take on the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology in a non-conference match played at the Sportsmen's Tennis Club in Dorchester on Saturday afternoon (10/18) at 12pm.
