SAINTS CELEBRATE SENIOR DAY WITH 6-3 WIN OVER MUSTANGS
Oct. 10, 2010
BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Women's Tennis Team celebrated the careers of the two seniors on the squad, Megan Harrington (Leicester, Mass.) and Alexandra Shakra (Bedford, N.H.), before defeating Mount Ida College, 6-3, in the Saints' last regular season home match. The conference win for Emmanuel boosts the Saints' record to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in the league. Mount Ida dropped to 3-5 on the season and 2-3 in GNAC play.
Emmanuel's freshmen duo of Amanda Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) and Kate Biffinger (Avon, Conn.) fell in first doubles to the Mustangs' team of Emilie Cloutier and Jessica Lindquist, 8-4. Freshman Brittany Rothstein (Tiverton, R.I.) and sophomore Emily Resnevic (Manville, R.I.) lost a 2nd doubles contest to Veronica Williams and Amy Warner, 8-6. The Saints were able to pick up a win in 3rd doubles, when junior Erin Thornton (Worcester, Mass.) and rookie Christine Cuddemi (Saugus, Mass.) teamed up to defeat Melissa Smith and Nanouma Joachim, 8-2. Both Thornton and Cuddemi were playing in their first match of the season.
With the three doubles matches complete, the Mustangs took a 2-1 edge into the singles action. Harrington, a 3-time GNAC Academic All-Conference selection and a 2009 2nd Team All-GNAC pick, was defeated in No. 1 singles, falling to Emilie Cloutier, 6-1, 6-2. This would prove to be Mount Ida's final point of the day, as the Saints rebounded to sweep the remaining singles matches.
Sophomore Jenna Reid (Lincoln, R.I.) knocked off Lindquist in 2nd singles, 6-0, 6-1. No. 3 singles featured a win by freshman Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, N.J.), 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, over Williams. Shakra, a 4-year player at Emmanuel and a 2-time Academic All-GNAC player, topped Warner, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.
Sophomore Lauren Lesko (Plymouth, Mass.) played in her first match of the season and defeated Smith, 6-0, 6-1, in 5th singles. Junior Victoria Trull (Lowell, Mass.) topped Joachim, 6-0, 6-2, giving Emmanuel a point at No. 6 singles.
Both teams will play GNAC matches on Monday afternoon. The Saints will travel to New Haven, Connecticut to take on the Falcons of Albertus Magnus College in a 1pm start. Mount Ida will play in Providence, R.I. at Johnson & Wales University on Monday at noon.
